Characteristics of Pietrain pigs
The Pietrain pig originated in Belgium. Its coat color is grayish-white with irregular dark black spots, and occasionally brown hair appears. Its body is cone-shaped with full, well-developed muscles. Its main characteristic is a high lean meat rate. However, it gains weight relatively slowly and shows obvious stress. Because of its high lean meat rate, it is often used as the sire for two-way or three-way crossbreeding. To avoid the occurrence of stress reactions, it is often crossed with Duroc or Large Yorkshire sows to produce Pietrain x Duroc or Pietrain x Large Yorkshire two-way boars as terminal sires for commercial pig farms.
