The Pig Estrous Cycle and Its Signs
Once a sow reaches sexual maturity, she will exhibit an inherent cycle of sexual activity, also known as the estrous cycle. The average estrous cycle of a sow is 21 days, with a range of 19 to 24 days.

Signs of estrus in sows: the estrous cycle is divided into proestrus, estrus, and metestrus. In the 24 hours before estrus, the sow shows certain physiological and behavioral signs. There are generally 7 common signs of estrus: restlessness, mounting other sows, poor appetite, watery mucus discharge from the vulva, biting the pen rails, frequent grunting, and reddening and swelling of the vulva.
