How to Check Semen Volume, Color, Odor, and pH in Pig Artificial Insemination
Pig Artificial Insemination Methods - Checking Semen Volume, Color, Odor, and pH
The ejaculate volume of a young boar is generally 150 to 200 milliliters per ejaculation, and that of an adult boar is 200 to 300 milliliters. Normal semen is milky white or grayish white in color. The greater the sperm density, the whiter the color. If the semen color is abnormal (turning red or yellow-green), it indicates inflammation of the boar's reproductive system, and use must be stopped immediately and treatment given in time. Normal semen has no odor or a slight musky odor characteristic of the boar. If there is an abnormal odor (such as a sour, foul smell), it also indicates inflammation of the boar's reproductive system, and use should likewise be stopped and treatment given in time. Boar semen is generally weakly alkaline or neutral and can be measured with pH test paper.
