Grow succulents this way to sail through summer easily and still burst out of their pots

Succulents are deeply loved by everyone for their cute, chubby looks. But lately many people have told me that their succulents are going through a trial, and one careless move kills them, which basically comes down to overwatering or poor ventilation and so on. So how do you get succulents safely through the summer?

Use a fan

When succulents die, it is basically because the summer weather is too hot and the indoor space is not ventilated, so they suffocate to death. So you can fan the succulents with a fan, which can lower the indoor temperature and also speed up indoor air circulation. If you have air conditioning at home, you can grow them indoors, and then just open the windows to ventilate in the evening or morning.

Cut off the flower stalks or flower buds

If you find flower buds or flower stalks on a succulent, you must prune them off immediately. Never keep them just because they look nice, because with succulents like Moon Halo, once they bloom, the succulent will supply all its nutrients to the flowers, and after the flowers fade, the succulent will simply pass away too.

Put small stones at the bottom of the pot

You can pick up some small stones outside, roughly the same size, then disinfect them, put them in a shallow dish, and add some water, but the water level must not exceed the stones. Then place the succulent on top of the stones. Once the water in the shallow dish evaporates, it can increase the humidity of the air and soil, which reduces how often you need to water, and this way you can avoid the roots rotting and the plant dying.

Lay a layer of paper towel on top of the soil

Summer temperatures are higher, so evaporation happens faster. So we can lay a layer of paper towel on top of the potting soil, then spray a layer of water on it and just keep the paper towel moist. This can slow down the evaporation rate of the soil moisture and also give the soil a moisture-retaining effect.

Grow companion plants in the succulent pot

You can scatter some seeds of Stringy Stonecrop (Sedum sarmentosum) along the edge of the succulent's potting soil and let them grow slowly. Once they come up, they can improve the ornamental appeal of the succulent and also keep the soil from compacting, so the succulent grows better. But you can choose different companion plants; just be sure to pick slow-growing, evergreen species, otherwise they will easily compete with the succulent for nutrients, and that would not be worth the loss.
