Does Kalanchoe need frequent pruning?

First we need to understand the habits of Kalanchoe. When Kalanchoe blooms, as long as a side shoot emerges, the flower buds always grow from the tip of that side shoot. In other words, if you don't prune it, and only a single terminal shoot grows, it won't bloom much, and it will look very unsightly. Only by continually pinching off the tops and continually pruning, so that it branches out into more side shoots, will it be able to bloom beautifully. The more side shoots that emerge after pruning and pinching, the more flowers it will produce.

Of course, if you want it to have many side shoots, one thing is that pruning must keep up, and another is that during its growing season you must keep up with fertilizing and watering. Supplement with fertilizer regularly, two to three times a month; during the growing season rather than the blooming season, use a balanced multi-element fertilizer to supplement and promote its growth. Once the main stem grows to a certain size, you need to pinch off its top, and afterward it will grow side shoots from between the two leaves at the top; then once the side shoots grow to a certain length, pinch them again, and keep this up until autumn. Because autumn's light is suitable for it to bloom, at that time you should stop pinching the tops and give it a phosphorus-potassium fertilizer supplement, and it will be able to bloom.

There is one more point: all year round you must give it plenty of light, avoiding the midday sun in summer. In the other seasons you can skip shading. With sufficient light, the stem nodes won't become leggy; by pinching the tops you make it branch into side shoots, and by fertilizing you make it grow quickly; after fertilizing, the side shoots grow thick and strong, and when the time comes there will be many shoots, growing well, and only then will it bloom more.
