For succulents, summer is a deadly gate to pass. Summer care is such a hassle, and they up and die at the drop of a hat. So is there any shortcut that saves effort and keeps succulents alive? Yes, a few summer survival gadgets will do the trick!

Summer survival gadget - moon boat

What is a moon boat?

A moon boat is similar to an openwork flower basket. Once woven, line it with a layer of palm bark and you can grow succulents in it!

Whether it's the moon boat or the palm bark, both are super breathable and drain water extremely well. When watering in summer, you don't need to worry about watering too much, nor about the soil being poorly ventilated and causing root and leaf rot.

How to make it

1. Bend a few slightly thick wire rods into two small circles and one large circle, then wrap and secure them together in the middle with thin wire.

2. Bend the shorter wire pieces to make small decorations.

3. Secure the finished decorations onto the large circle with thin wire.

4. Weave a mesh inside the large circle with the thinnest wire, and a moon boat is done!

5. Line the moon boat with a layer of palm bark, a grass mat, etc., then spread granular soil on top, and you can grow plants in it!

Summer survival gadget - squeeze-type watering bottle

What is a squeeze-type watering bottle?

In summer, succulents grow slowly. At this time you can neither skip watering nor water too much. With a squeeze-type watering bottle, by changing the water flow pressure, you can prevent succulents from root rot or dying of thirst!

How to make it

1. Prepare materials: mineral water bottle, drinking straw, screwdriver

2. Make a hole: heat the screwdriver on a gas stove, then quickly drill a hole in the bottle cap. Simple and effortless!

3. Cut the straw to the desired length, then insert it into the hole, and that's it!

4. Fill the bottle with water and it's ready for watering plants. With a squeeze-type watering bottle, the watering position is easy to control, so you don't need to worry about splashing water onto the leaves and scorching them. It's especially suitable for succulents with dense leaves.

Leaf propagation gadget - water storage cup

What is a water storage cup?

When doing leaf propagation for succulents in summer, make a water storage cup from a mineral water bottle and it will keep the soil nicely moist, greatly improving the survival rate.

How to make it

1. Clean the outside of the mineral water bottle, cut it in half at the 1/2 point, and be careful to trim the edges neatly with scissors.

2. Use a small eyebrow razor to cut an X-shaped slit in the bottle cap, then thread a cotton string through it, with the string slightly longer than the upper half of the bottle.

3. After threading the string, screw on the bottle cap, then fit the upper and lower halves together, and a water storage cup is complete!

4. Fill the upper half with growing medium, insert the leaves, then water thoroughly once, keeping the water level in the lower part at about 1~2cm. After that, just wait for roots to form, no more watering needed!

Summer survival gadget - solar panel electric fan

What is a solar panel electric fan?

Combine a solar panel with an electric fan, then pull over a layer of shade netting, and you get sun protection, rain protection, ventilation, and cooling - four benefits in one for succulents!

How to make it

1. Prepare materials: wire, solar panel, electric fan

2. Use wire to fix the solar panel onto the balcony flower rack, then tie the rotatable fan onto the flower rack, below the solar panel.

3. Turn on the fan switch and the whole summer survival gadget starts working: the fan provides ventilation and cooling, the shade netting blocks the sun and filters light into scattered light, and the solar panel provides cooling. Even at 40°C high temperatures, succulents can stay alive steadily!

Note: the fan's power cord must be able to reach a socket!

If flower friends find it too much trouble, or don't have many succulents at home, you can just run one fan, or just pull over one shade net.
