How to Grow Phalaenopsis Orchids? A Complete Guide to Home Care Methods

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
To grow Phalaenopsis orchids (moth orchids) at home, you need slightly acidic soil with good air permeability and relatively high nutrient content, maintain a temperature of 16-30°C, and provide it with sufficient but not excessive water and diffused light. If you want to propagate it, the flower stalk bud forcing method is recommended.

I. Growing Conditions

1. Soil: For growing Phalaenopsis orchids at home, try to use slightly acidic soil with good air permeability and relatively high nutrient content. Specifically, you can mix pine needles, bark strips, peanut shells and clay balls.

2. Temperature: During the growing period, you need to provide it with a temperature of 16-30°C; in summer, make sure the temperature stays below 32°C; in winter, keep the temperature between 13-16°C.

3. Water: It prefers humidity, so replenish water promptly and do not let the soil dry out. Also spray some water mist on its leaves at the right time to maintain air humidity.

4. Light: It likes semi-shaded growing conditions, so just place it in a spot with diffused light. In summer, shading is needed.

II. Propagation Methods

For propagating Phalaenopsis orchids at home, the most commonly used method is the flower stalk bud forcing method. Specifically, after flowering, remove the spent flowers from the flower stalk, then disinfect the flower stalk. After that, remove the bracts, then apply bud forcing medicine to its buds. Then place the plant in a dark environment at 25-28°C. After about 90 days, the young buds will grow roots, and then you can cut them off and transplant them into new pots.
