Orchids are one of China's top ten famous flowers. Before blooming, orchids grow in a rather plain and fresh elegant way, and when they bloom, they show a variety of different colors depending on the variety. Since ancient times, orchids have been the favorite of scholars and writers, and even today, many flower lovers still like to grow orchids in their studies, where they serve as a fine decorative touch.

Although growing orchids has now become fairly common, not many people can actually grow them well. Many novice flower lovers who have just started growing orchids find that after a while, the orchids they are growing have slowly begun to decline. So what exactly is causing orchids to grow poorly? How should orchids actually be grown? Today Huar Gu will introduce the watering method for orchids. By learning how to water orchids, we can clearly understand their growth habits and bid farewell to the troubles that improper watering brings to orchid growth.

There are quite a few types of orchids. Common orchids in our country include Cymbidium goeringii (spring orchid), Cymbidium faberi (Faber's cymbidium), Cymbidium ensifolium (sword-leaf cymbidium), Cymbidium sinense (Chinese cymbidium) and Cymbidium kanran (cold orchid), and they are all symbols of nobility and elegance. There are also many tropical orchids, but here we mainly introduce the watering and growing techniques for Chinese orchids. Let us now look at the growth habits of orchids!

Orchids are plants that prefer shade and fear direct strong light. They like to grow in moist places, but they cannot tolerate waterlogging, and they grow poorly in dry environments. Orchids like to grow in fertile soil rich in humus, and the soil must have good drainage; they struggle to grow in poor, heavy clay soil. Orchids require good air circulation in their growing environment, and orchids grown in enclosed spaces are prone to pests and diseases.

From the growth habits of orchids, we know that orchids like to grow in moist places but cannot tolerate waterlogging. Therefore, when watering potted orchids, we must never let the soil in the pot stay waterlogged for a long time, otherwise it will cause the orchid roots to rot, and the leaves to turn black and become soft.

When watering orchids, you need to replenish moisture in time before the soil dries out completely. Never wait until the potting soil is completely dry before watering, as this can easily lead to water shortage and stunted growth in orchids.

So how do you judge whether an orchid needs watering?

In summer, we need to pay special attention to observing how dry or moist the potting soil is. When you see that the surface soil of the orchid pot has dried out and turned a little whitish, it is time to start watering. Water thoroughly in one go, pouring slowly, and stop watering once water seeps out from the bottom of the pot. This can prevent waterlogging caused by watering too much at once.

For orchids grown indoors, in summer they are generally watered about once every 5 days. Of course, the temperature varies from region to region, and the wind conditions in the spot where we place them vary too, so it is still best to observe first and then water.

In spring and autumn, they can generally be watered once every 7-10 days. We should check the moisture level of the potting soil once every week. We cannot neglect management for a long time and let the orchids go short of water, nor water too early, as excess water can easily soak the roots.

In winter, an orchid's need for water drops noticeably. When the weather is cool and overcast, watering once a month is enough. Under normal conditions, water once every 15-20 days.

The watering intervals above vary with region and temperature. When watering, we must adapt to local conditions and the season, and must not interpret these references too rigidly.

The above is the orchid watering method and some precautions introduced to you by Huar Gu. If you also like growing orchids, how do you water yours? Share some of your good experience and methods so we can learn and improve together!
