Jasmine Pruning Time and Method Explained in Detail

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
There are three main pruning times for jasmine: the growing period around Qingming, the period after flowers fade in August-September, and the dormant period before spring. During the growing period, overly dense branches need to be thinned out and overly long branches shortened; when the flowers fade, all the spent flowers and withered buds on the flowering branches need to be cut off; during the dormant period, leggy and weak flowering branches need to be cut off.

I. Pruning Time

There are three main pruning times for jasmine. The first is during the spring growing period, that is, around Qingming Festival; pruning at this time can help it grow evenly faster. The second is after the flowers fade, that is, in August-September; pruning at this time can help it recover quickly from the weak post-bloom period. The third is during the dormant period, that is, before spring, which can help it grow more robustly.

II. Pruning Method

The first pruning requires thinning out overly dense branches and shortening overly long branches. This allows the whole plant to grow evenly and increases its ornamental value.

The second pruning requires cutting off all the spent flowers and withered buds left on the flowering branches after the jasmine flowers fade, in order to reduce nutrient consumption. In addition, for diseased and weak flowering branches, the entire flowering branch can be cut off.

The third pruning requires cutting off all the leggy, weak, and pest- or disease-affected flowering branches to ensure the plant can grow more robustly.
