The predecessor of Shanghai Botanical Garden, Longhua Nursery, was founded in 1954 and is known for extensively collecting precious bonsai. As early as before the establishment of Shanghai Botanical Garden in 1974, it took on the work of collecting and cultivating bonsai and nursery stock. With a long history and a wealth of talented people, it is the birthplace of Shanghai-style bonsai and is renowned at home and abroad for its artistic characteristic of "learning from nature, ancient and picturesque." Since its opening, the Bonsai Garden has received numerous distinguished guests, including Cambodian Prince Sihanouk, the 10th Panchen Erdeni, and former Minister of National Defense Zhang Aiping, and has won their recognition and praise.
