Propagating plants is a process every flower lover goes through. This illustrated guide to azalea cutting propagation is suitable for beginners, and also for gardeners who have just bought an azalea. Why do we say it suits those who have just bought an azalea? Because azaleas are relatively difficult to care for, so trying cuttings early lets you keep a backup.

1. When is the right time to take azalea cuttings

For azalea cuttings, semi-lignified branches of the current year are best, meaning you cut branches that grew in spring during summer. In other words, take cuttings in summer. Some gardeners are not quite clear on this, so to put it simply: the green branches on the mother plant are best. Spring growth from old branches of the previous year will not grow well even if the cutting takes root, and tender shoots are basically out of the question, so this kind of summer branch is the most suitable.

2. Choosing the cutting medium

Inorganic media are recommended, such as plain sand, vermiculite, perlite and the like, or sandy soil can also be used.

3. Choosing the container

Since we need to cover it with plastic film, whether you use a flower pot or another container, it is best to leave some distance between the medium and the wall of the pot, about 7 cm.

4. Preparing the branch

Remove one or two leaves from the bottom, leaving about 3 cm of bare stem, which makes it easier to insert the cutting, and the leaf axils where leaves were removed also root easily. Also pinch off the tender shoot at the top, so that more branches will form later and the shape will look better.

5. Inserting the cutting

Use a small wooden stick to first make a hole in the soil, then put the azalea branch in, and water thoroughly. Be careful to wash away the gap between the hole and the branch, then cover with plastic film and place it in a cool, ventilated spot.
