Where is the best position to prune a Kalanchoe?

For post-bloom pruning of Kalanchoe, cut off the part below the 2 pairs of leaves beneath the flower, and also remove poorly growing side branches; cut off some healthy branches to use as cuttings for propagation. For pruning during the growing season, pinch off the growing tip when the plant is about 5cm tall, and branches taller than 12cm can also be pruned off. Apart from post-bloom pruning, try to prune during the growing season.

1. Position

Post-bloom pruning: When pruning it, first cut off the flowers, then cut off the other remaining branches and leggy branches. When pruning the flowers, cut off the part below the 2 pairs of leaves beneath the flower branch, and also remove side branches that are growing poorly or are diseased. In addition, cut off some healthy branches to use as cuttings, so they can grow into new plants. Generally, after blooming, prune the branches to about 3cm, and use the healthy branches that were cut off for cuttings.

Growing-season pruning: When the plant is about 5cm tall, pinch off the new buds at the top; branches taller than 12cm and some diseased branches can be pruned.

2. Time

The pruning time is distinguished according to the different growth stages of the plant. Pruning during the growing season should be light, mainly cutting off branches that ruin the plant's shape or are too long, to promote side branch growth and flower bud differentiation; while post-bloom pruning should be heavy, cutting off most of the branches, because after blooming the plant enters dormancy and does not grow, so nutrient consumption should be reduced as much as possible.

3. Care

Kalanchoe likes a warm environment, and generally grows normally when kept in an environment of 15-25°C. During the peak growing season, the amount of water and fertilizer can be increased; watering twice a week and fertilizing once every 2 months is sufficient.
