As Major Heat approaches, in previous years at this time I was already in extreme panic, because the pot-collecting season in the free-shipping zone had officially begun. This year the situation is quite different. Having basically grasped the growth patterns of succulents and knowing what they want and don't want, I'm striving to get through a summer vacation with the lowest empty-pot rate.
The large clump of Echeveria 'Liberia' unfurls its graceful figure and says coquettishly, "Master, the typhoon has made it cool these past few days, I love playing outdoors!"
Pansy calmly shakes off its dead leaves: "Master, remember to pick out the dead leaves, it helps with ventilation and heat dissipation, and also prevents an outbreak of mealybugs!" OK, tweezers at the ready!
Echeveria 'Yangjin' says lazily, "Master, don't cut off the water, just water a little less!"
Echeveria lilacina keeps waving its hand: "I don't need much water, just a little bit of tender feeling..."
The companions in the large clump of Echeveria 'Lucina' rush to speak: "Getting more sun is always good. The south-facing balcony has no sunlight by noon, just perfect."
Echeveria 'Sword Nova' twists its neck proudly: "When the highest temperature exceeds 35°C, remember to mist me at night!" No problem, misting at night to keep moist.
Echeveria 'Wrinkled Laguna' pouts a little unhappily: "Master, change my angle for me!"
The large clump of Echeveria 'Original Pinwheel' stretches lazily: "Pick out the dead leaves, don't forget, the planting density is a bit high!"
The large clump of Echeveria 'Blue Apple' shakes its hand while saying, "Give me some water, I'm thirsty!"
The newly planted Echeveria 'Cute Rose' acts cute and gestures like a flower: "I'm the cutest, Master, give me some water!" Counting on my fingers (flipping through the calendar), it's been nearly 1 week since watering, so I quickly use a long-spout watering can to give it a drink.
Echeveria 'Ebony' waves its hand: "Master, I don't need to drink water, really I don't."
Graptosedum 'Qiuli' waves desperately: "Master, I'm so thirsty, water me more!"
Echeveria 'Queen Violet' squints sideways: "In a few days when the temperature exceeds 35°C, quickly move me to the summer resort (balcony)"
The jelly-colored Echeveria 'Onslow' smooths its skirt: "Master, just mist me a little!"
Echeveria 'Green Rose' shakes its head willfully: "No water, no, no!"
Aeonium 'Little Man Festival' grown into a round ball blinks and says: "Water, the source of life, bring me more!" Alright, your wish is granted.
Echeveria 'Charming Night' (Lipstick) shakes its head: "No water, no."
The jelly-colored Echeveria 'Maiden Star' shouts loudly: "I want water, I want water."
Echeveria 'Osmanthus Sweetheart' shrinks straight back: "No water, just adjust my angle."
Echeveria 'Blue Velvet' twists its waist and says: "Let my little brother get more sun facing southeast, he wants to grow tall."
Echeveria 'Egg Yolk Teyulian' bends its waist: "Master, no water, remember to pick out the dead leaves."
Echeveria 'Cupid' opens its embrace: "Master, mist me a little."
The large mixed planter is always the liveliest: "I want water," "Me too," "Me as well"...
The large clump of Kalanchoe 'Divine Rhapsody' waves its enchanting long hair (flower stalks): "Master, I want to bloom!"
Sedum 'Jade Pendant' raises its hand desperately: "Master, give me water!"
Aeonium 'Yero Rose' hugs its head: "Master, we've gone dormant, no water, no water."
The clustered Echeveria 'Evening Glow' sways its shoulders: "Give me some water, so thirsty."
Echeveria 'Takasago No Okina' twirls its skirt: "No, No, No, no water!"
Each succulent drinks a different amount of water. As the master, did you get it? Many novice succulent growers tend to use a one-size-fits-all approach, either watering them all or not watering any. In fact, even if they are placed on the same balcony, because of individual differences among plants, differences in variety, size, and growth stage (for example, some have just adapted to the pot, some are already old stumps, some have just suffered pest damage, etc.), whether the pot is breathable (the material of the pot, depth), the composition of the potting soil (the proportion of grit), the light and ventilation of the placement position, and various other subtle differences, a one-size-fits-all approach easily causes problems. If you don't have many succulents at home, and you happen to observe them often, you might as well try treating them differently during summer, and learn to judge whether a certain pot of plants needs watering, and how much water to give at one time to meet its summer needs without waterlogging and black rot. This is something no outsider can do for you.
Although summer vacation succulents are mostly green, a bit leggy, a bit spread out, being alive and healthy is what matters most. Don't simply cut off water entirely; mist, give appropriate water, keep records with a calendar, and let the succulents easily cope with the scorching summer. Wait for the cool breeze of autumn to once again send their appearance through the roof.
