To grow flowers, you must first grow the roots. This is a consensus reached by flower lovers. Actually, what I want to say today is that this statement is both right and wrong. In the early stage of growing flowers, the root system of the flowers must be well developed, so that the roots can absorb sufficient nutrients from the potting soil and ensure the normal growth and flowering of the flowers. But after growing to a certain point, the root system of the flowers becomes more and more developed. At this time, because the space of the pot is limited, if the roots cannot be handled correctly, the growth of the flowers will gradually become slower and slower, and they may even wither and die. Today I will talk about root handling for the 4 most common types of potted plants kept at home!

1. Pothos

Pothos belongs to the foliage plant category. Its leaf shape is beautiful and it can purify the air. Pothos is easy to care for, grows especially fast, and its root system also grows very vigorously. A very important method in pothos care is repotting about every two years. The purpose is that because the root system is too developed, after 2 years or even less, the roots will have eaten up the potting soil. In this way, because the potting soil cannot provide enough nutrients, the growth of pothos becomes slow, and it may even develop yellow leaves and wither.

The repotting process is also very simple. Just take the pothos completely out of the pot, then gently break apart and separate the soil and roots, prune away all old roots, rotten roots, and dead roots, keep the healthy roots, disinfect and sterilize the roots, and then repot them. After pothos is repotted, it must be watered thoroughly so the potting soil absorbs enough water, and then some water should also be sprayed on the leaves to increase air humidity.

2. Spider plant

The growth of spider plant is especially interesting. It not only has fleshy roots, but the roots of spider plant will also tightly wrap the soil together, and in severe cases can even cause the soil to become compacted. Therefore, spider plant needs to be repotted about once a year, otherwise the roots will already have filled the entire pot. At this time, there is less soil and too many roots. It needs more nutrients but also cannot absorb nutrients, which can easily cause yellow leaves and death!

3. Clivia

Clivia is a bit more troublesome to care for. Clivia is also a potted plant whose root system grows relatively quickly. If it is not repotted for 2 years, then for Clivia it is actually impossible to expect it to send up a flower stalk and bloom. The soil around the roots simply cannot provide the nutrients needed for the flower stalk. At this time, Clivia also needs to be taken out of the pot, and all old roots, empty roots, and rotten roots must be removed. The remaining roots need to be soaked in potassium permanganate solution for disinfection, then dried and repotted. After repotting is finished, the plant should be given a period of time to recover. Besides not immediately watering or fertilizing, during the recovery period it also must not be watered thoroughly or fertilized. The recovery period is about 3 months. Only after the recovery period ends can watering be increased and fertilizer applied appropriately.

4. Snake plant

For snake plant as well, after about 1.5 years, the root system will fill the entire potting soil. Moreover, if snake plant is not cared for properly, it is prone to root rot. Therefore, timely repotting is the only way to make snake plant grow more luxuriantly, become taller, and even produce a frenzy of side shoots, turning one pot into 10 pots.

Growing flowers is the same as doing anything else. How much you put in is how much the flowers give you. Only by enduring loneliness can you keep the flowers blooming!
