Can't grow geraniums well? Do these few things right and they'll be covered in big flower balls
Can't grow geraniums well? Get any one of these points wrong and it won't work, but do it right and they'll be covered in big flower balls
When is the right time to prune geraniums? How do you care for them?
In the end, geraniums can be pruned at any time during their growing season. Because winter temperatures are low, they don't grow. That season isn't suitable for pruning, since pruning can cause the branches to die back or even the whole plant to dry up and die. As long as it's their growing season, we can prune them.
Geraniums have very poor tillering ability. If you don't prune them, they'll grow fewer side shoots, and then they'll bloom less. If you want them to bloom a lot, when they're still small seedlings we need to frequently pinch off the tops and prune them often, to encourage them to branch out more side shoots, so that later they can bloom abundantly. Xiao Qi grows three geraniums of different varieties. They've been blooming non-stop all along; after they finish blooming, if fewer buds appear, Xiao Qi prunes them a bit. Right now they're growing very well. I'll make a video to show everyone later.
When growing geraniums, fertilizer and water must keep up. As long as it's their growing season, fertilize them regularly. If you want them to bloom, use a fertilizer mainly based on phosphorus and potassium as much as possible; don't supplement phosphorus and potassium alone. Because their root system is rather weak, if you supplement only phosphorus and potassium, they may bloom a lot, but later if you water improperly, it can easily cause root rot.
The root system of geraniums is made up of very fine hair-like roots, with basically no main root, so you must pay attention during summer care. When the weather is muggy and there's no ventilation, don't water too often, and especially in summer, don't let them get rained on. In summer the temperature is too high, and the temperature inside the potting soil is high too. Rain can start falling at any time, and once it gets into the potting soil, the rainwater is cold while the soil is hot, which causes root rot. This is the main reason geraniums die when they're not grown well in summer.
One more of the most important points is that when growing geraniums, the soil mix must be loose and breathable. If the soil isn't loose and isn't breathable, especially in summer or winter, after you water it won't dry for a long time, or if ventilation is poor, in summer the roots can easily be suffocated and the plant dies. So the soil mix must be loose and breathable; when you water, the water should be able to flow straight out from the bottom of the pot, and that's the best soil. Then we supplement fertilizer regularly two to three times a month, so they don't lack nutrients, can grow more and bloom more.
Geraniums are considered fairly easy to grow. During care, pay attention to the points Xiao Qi mentioned above, and you'll definitely be able to grow them very well. In normal seasons give them plenty of light; in summer shade them appropriately to avoid the midday scorching sun, shading out more than 50% of the light, and they'll be able to grow very well, and bloom profusely and continuously.
In one minute I'll teach you the methods for soil mixing, fertilizing and watering geraniums, so you can grow them well.
