Growing flowers is not just a personal hobby; while it brings us stress relief and cultivates our character, it also beautifies our home environment, so that the whole family can enjoy a feast for the eyes together after a meal or over tea!
I have struggled along the road of growing succulents for several years, and I once felt discouraged because I could not grow them outdoors! Watching the hardworking succulent growers chase the sun like Kuafu, I was also troubled when people declared: you cannot grow succulents well on an indoor balcony because the glass blocks UV rays!
The era of those daunting terms like location, environment, and outdoor growing is over! We are not primitive humans! There is no need to leave things to fate and depend on the sky for our food. Living in a high-tech modern society, there is nothing that cannot be changed! Today I can proudly overturn the old traditions of growing succulents!
In the scorching summer, when the intense heat strikes, I can sit on my cool indoor balcony drinking tea, reading, listening to music, and admiring my succulents! Are you still worrying about hail, birds, sunburn, root suffocation, black rot, mushy rot, and all kinds of natural disasters!
In the bitter cold of winter, I can sit on my indoor balcony basking in the warm sunlight, watching pedestrians hurrying by and traffic flowing outside; are you worrying about temperature drops, snow, and freezing rain!
Actually, you can change all of these! Some things are not impossible to change, it just depends on the degree of your love and the degree of your need!
Today I mainly want to share with you the growing experience I have summed up over these years. Since everyone pursues a different level, please just take it as reference, and if you do not like it, please do not criticize!
Temperature: What was once called temperature difference is actually wrong. It is not that the bigger the temperature difference, the better; as long as the temperature stays below 25°C (0-22), it is fine. For temperature, we can rely on air conditioning and electric fans (when the temperature is between 0-22°C, there is no need to open windows for ventilation). Everyone does not need to worry about the ventilation issue.
Light: It is not that the stronger the UV rays, the better; it is the combination of red light, blue light, and UV rays. So if indoor sunlight is insufficient, we can rely on grow lights (full-spectrum UVB). The optimal light duration is (8-10) hours.
Soil mix: maifan stone, akadama, and vermiculite (peat soil according to personal preference, but medication needs to be added, otherwise bacteria and viruses will breed in a long-term hot, stuffy, and humid environment). Maifan stone and akadama (which are granules) make up 70%-80%, and vermiculite (a special soil conditioner that promotes succulent rooting and sprouting) makes up 20%-30%; the room for adjustment lies in the vermiculite. If you want your succulents to grow larger and faster, use more vermiculite; if you want your succulents to grow slowly with a controlled shape and controlled stem, increase the granules.
Water control: Control it until the leaves can be pinched into wrinkles!
Watering: Water thoroughly when completely dry, and use a spray head with fresh tap water to water thoroughly with a large amount of water. The purpose of the large amount of water is to let the water pass through the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot, carrying away carbon dioxide so the roots can better absorb oxygen.
If you have mastered temperature, light, soil mix, water control, and watering, then you can also grow succulents just as you please! It has nothing to do with location or environment, only with yourself!
It is now scorching July (July 14, 2018). Do not doubt your eyes; everything you see was photographed on that very year, month, and day. The beauty of Aeoniums in summer is nothing surprising, but as everyone knows, Ice Berry, Jinhui, Xiuyan, and so on are not summer varieties, yet they still remain colorful and splendid in summer!
My location is Taiyuan, Shanxi; I am Qingqing Green Tea, a succulent enthusiast who grows succulents on an indoor balcony; I do not fear the environment, and I believe in science and in myself!
Succulent culture needs you and me to promote it! Remember to share good articles more, so that more people fall in love with succulents! Use the power of plants to influence and heal the people around us!
