When watering orchids in summer, pay special attention to these 3 points, otherwise it is like throwing cold water on your orchids.
Before this, I wrote a very long article describing the detailed management of orchid care. It also covered the growth habits of various orchids and methods for growing them. However, I overlooked some common problems in summer orchid care.
Especially in summer, when the weather is relatively hot, you must therefore consider how to help orchids get through the summer safely. Among these, watering orchids is one of the difficult points in summer orchid care. Such problems are easily overlooked by people. Today, I will discuss the watering issue in the daily management of summer orchid care, in which these 3 points especially require our orchid growers to pay extra attention.
The first point is that the orchid's growing environment must be suitable. Normally, the temperature of an orchid's growing environment is between 20 and 30 degrees; if the temperature is too low or too high, the orchid's growth will be restricted. In the hot summer, we should ensure that the orchid's potting medium is only slightly moist; do not water too much, which would cause the orchid's roots to rot.
The second point is that when watering, you must water thoroughly. Many orchid-growing friends will say that when watering orchids, as long as you see water flowing out from the bottom of the orchid pot, it is thoroughly watered, but this is actually incorrect. Because the potting soil for orchids is relatively air-permeable and drainage-friendly, one round of watering is not enough to make the orchid thoroughly watered. At this time, after the first watering, wait 3 to 5 minutes, then water the orchid again. If you are caring for just one or two pots of orchids, you can use the soaking-pot method. If you are caring for many orchids, the soaking-pot method is not recommended; just use clean water for irrigation.
The third point is that when watering orchids in summer, you must reasonably choose the time for watering. When watering orchids in summer, you must choose an appropriate watering time. Usually, the best watering time, that is, when the temperature is most suitable, should be based on the orchid's own temperature, the temperature of the potting medium, and the temperature of the water used for watering. When these are basically at the same level, that is the best time. For example, at noon the temperature is relatively high, and the temperature of the potting medium and water is also relatively high. At this time, pouring a cup of cold water on them is no different from throwing cold water on the orchids; this practice is harmful and not beneficial to orchids. The correct time of day is after 5 or 6 p.m., when the potting medium temperature, the water temperature, and the temperature the orchid needs are on the same level, which is the best time for watering. Do you understand this way of watering?
