When caring for a potted money tree (Pachira aquatica), what fertilizer is best?
1. Nitrogen fertilizer and potassium fertilizer
The money tree mainly needs two nutrient elements. The first is nitrogen, which is for the leaves and can make them grow large and glossy. The second is potassium, which benefits the roots and helps them become stronger.
2. Slow-release fertilizer or homemade fertilizer
Generally speaking, compound fertilizer, liquid fertilizer and the like bought from the market are all fine. But relatively speaking, they are not targeted, so the results will not be very good. The best fertilizers to use are mainly the following two:
(1) Slow-release fertilizer: This kind of slow-release fertilizer is a special fertilizer specifically for foliage plants. It is generally granular and odorless. Apply it according to the instructions, and it will slowly release the fertilizer. So there is no need to worry that the plant will be burned by too much or too concentrated fertilizer. The method of use is also very simple: just make a few small holes around the edge of the pot, then put in the fertilizer.
(2) Cooked soybeans: If you are unwilling to use purchased fertilizer, then you can also make your own at home. For example, cooked soybeans are a good choice. They contain especially large amounts of nitrogen, and they can both supplement nutrients and not have an off-odor.
3. Fertilizing time and frequency
The main time it needs fertilizer is during the growing period, roughly from April to September. During this period, fertilizing about once every half month is fine. If the growth is too weak, then the interval can be shorter.
