What to Do If You Overwater a Money Tree? Here's How to Fix It Properly

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
If a money tree (Pachira aquatica) has been overwatered, you first need to check whether it has already died. Squeeze it with your hand and see whether soft sap oozes from the bark. If sap does ooze out, it has died and cannot be saved. If not, stop watering for three days and keep it out of strong light. Loosen the soil around the plant a little to help the water drain away. After some time, it may recover.

1. How to Tell

Overwatering can sometimes kill a plant. So you first need to judge whether it can be saved. Squeeze its trunk with your hand and see whether sap flows out. If it does, its bark has already died, and at that point it cannot be saved; you need to dispose of it as soon as possible so it does not affect other plants. If no sap flows out, then it can be saved.

2. How to Treat It

(1) The first thing to do is stop watering for about three days.

(2) During this period without watering, it is best not to put it in the sun or expose it to too strong light. Otherwise, the water will evaporate too quickly, and the plant will become severely dehydrated, which is extremely harmful to its growth.

(3) During this time, you also need to use small tools, such as a small wooden stick, to loosen the soil around the plant a little. Stir the soil gently, just enough to leave tiny air gaps in it. This improves aeration and helps the water dissipate.

3. Points to Note

(1) After treatment, if the plant shows obvious improvement, you can resume normal watering. Water only after you see that the soil has dried out; if it is still moist, do not water.

(2) Just to be safe, you can add some carbendazim and the like to the water you use, which can help prevent the plant from getting sick.
