Many people say that the most important point in keeping ornamental fish is that when the water is good, the fish are good. There is no doubt about it, just as people need fresh air to live, fish cannot be separated from water, and fish health cannot be separated from good water. Many friends also ask what fish are easy to keep and not easy to die. Do not hold such a mindset. If you cultivate the water well, any fish is easy to keep. So why is the water for keeping fish so different from ordinary water? Why is the water for keeping fish so important?

The range of ornamental fish kept is very wide, and different fish adapt to different "types" of water, so the requirements for water environment conditions are relatively complex. In many cases, ornamental fish mostly live in limited spaces, and the water body space is quite special. The water volume is small, and the exchange and self-purification capacity is poor. After a period of keeping, various chemical substances, organic substances, bacteria, algae, and so on in the water gradually increase, and water quality factors such as pH, transparency, hardness, and nutrient level are prone to change. Therefore, how to properly regulate the water quality needed by ornamental fish is also very important.

Apart from clarity, water quality is something you cannot see, so the water body is affected by various factors. Whether seawater or freshwater, the effects on water quality come from two aspects: chemical factors and physical factors. Physical factors include water temperature, light, and so on; chemical factors include dissolved gases in water such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, and dissolved salts; and biological factors include bacteria, planktonic animals and plants. Together they form the water body ecosystem. Today we will discuss one part of this, the issue of water temperature.

Factor one affecting water quality: water temperature

Water temperature is most closely related to fish. It directly affects the fish's feeding, growth, and development, and also directly or indirectly affects other environmental conditions in the fish tank. Almost all environmental factors in the fish tank are constrained by temperature. Different types of ornamental fish each have their suitable water temperature requirements. For example, goldfish and koi can tolerate temperatures of 0.5~38°C, and the suitable water temperature is 23~32°C. Previously, the editor posted an article about goldfish in an island country being frozen by ice on the water surface, and after thawing they continued to jump around lively, so as long as it does not go below minus 5 degrees, they will not freeze to death. But if the water temperature is below 10°C, fish feeding decreases and growth is slow. Above 15°C~20°C, food intake and growth rate increase noticeably. So many fish sellers regulate water temperature to limit fish growth. Everyone can also refer to their own regional conditions to moderately regulate the water temperature in the fish tank.

Most ornamental fish like warmth, and the suitable water temperature for living is 25~33°C. At this temperature, fish feed vigorously and grow quickly; below 25°C, the fish body is prone to ichthyophthirius disease. At a water temperature of 15~19°C, they lie at the bottom of the tank and refuse food. If you find that your fish are lying at the bottom of the tank and do not respond to food, then your first reaction should be to check whether the water temperature is normal, and then investigate other factors one by one. Therefore, before buying ornamental fish, everyone must clearly understand what temperature they need, and provide suitable water temperature during the keeping process.

The effects of water temperature on fish tanks and fish ponds:

In aquariums and pond water bodies, as temperature rises, oxygen content gradually decreases, especially obviously in the high-temperature seasons of summer and autumn. This is because as temperature rises, the dissolved oxygen saturation of the water body decreases, and the metabolism of fish, bacteria, and plants increases, consuming more oxygen, which easily causes oxygen deficiency. Therefore, "gasping at the surface" or "smothering in the tank" incidents easily occur. In addition, temperature can also affect the ratio of free ammonia and ammonium salts. Under conditions of higher temperature and pH, more free ammonia can be produced, and free ammonia is the most toxic form of ammonia nitrogen. During the high-temperature period of midsummer, when the organic matter content in the water body is relatively high, ornamental fish are prone to ammonia nitrogen poisoning for this reason.

Changes in water temperature not only have a very large impact on aquatic ornamental fish themselves, but also affect the maintenance of aquarium water quality. For example, temperature changes can kill bacteria on the filter, leading to increased accumulation of pollutants and reducing biological purification capacity. Therefore, maintaining a constant temperature in the aquarium is the most important daily management task.

During ornamental fish keeping in winter, a heater rod can be used. When changing water, make sure the temperature of the newly added water does not differ too much from the temperature of the water in the aquarium. A difference of 1-3°C is most suitable. If the temperature difference during water changes is too large, fish are prone to catching cold, sinking to the bottom of the tank, and not eating. It is recommended that everyone not place the aquarium near a doorway or in a place where sunlight can shine directly. Keeping the water temperature constant is most important!
