Buy an azalea and it dies every time? Learn the care tips and it will bloom abundantly
Choosing a flowerpot
For the pot, a clay pot is more suitable, as it has better aeration. Since azaleas have shallow roots and grow slowly, you can choose a smaller pot, so water is not wasted when watering and growth is better. As for the potting soil, use a looser, well-draining acidic soil.
Watering
Azalea roots are very fine and have poor absorption capacity, and water must be taken up through the roots to reach the plant, so watering azaleas is a technical job: water too much and the roots rot easily, water too little and the leaves dry out.
Generally speaking, in early spring we only need to keep the potting soil moist. In late spring and early summer, when it is preparing to bloom, its water demand increases greatly, so water a little more.
In summer, when the temperature is too high, besides watering, also spray some water on the plant. In autumn, when the weather turns cool, you need to control water moderately, letting the potting soil dry out slightly. In winter, after it enters dormancy, reduce watering.
Light
During azalea cultivation, always ensure it gets sufficient light, because only with sufficient light will it bloom well. In the hot summer it cannot be put out in the blazing sun; shading should be strengthened to prevent sun damage. In addition, during the blooming season, appropriate protection should also be provided; a shade net can be used for protection, since it cannot be exposed to the blazing sun during the flowering period either.
Fertilizing
Proper fertilizing can make azaleas grow thicker and faster. As with most indoor flower cultivation, the fertilizing principle for azaleas is also light but frequent, that is, apply a little at a time, and you can apply it several times.
When old leaves turn green, during flowering, and after flowering, apply fertilizer appropriately two to three times. During hot, high-temperature weather, never fertilize. For azalea fertilizing, you can use fishy water, rapeseed cake and other materials, all of which must be fully decomposed before use. If you find diseased or weak branches, cut them off promptly to prevent them from affecting the healthy growth of other branches.
Suitable temperature
The temperature most suitable for azalea growth is 15-25°C. In spring or autumn, try to let it grow within this temperature range. In summer, when the temperature is relatively high, pay attention to temperature control; the maximum must not exceed 32°C. In winter, when the temperature is relatively low, move it indoors promptly and keep the temperature above 5°C.
Pruning
Pruning. Azaleas grow relatively fast and easily become very dense, which causes many inner branches and leaves to get no light and be unable to grow healthily. So prune it promptly; this not only makes it look better but also keeps it healthier.
Repotting
Repotting. Azalea growth consumes nutrients in the soil. After one or two years of growing, the nutrients in the soil will be used up. At this point, replace it with new nutrient-rich soil so it can continue to grow healthily.
The master's summary
Many flower lovers say azaleas are very hard to grow: buy one and it dies, especially in summer, when they die even more easily, and then they never dare touch azaleas again. I have also killed them before and could not figure out why. Now I finally understand: actually, you only need to remember 3 points to grow them well: do not expose them to the midday sun, find ways to increase humidity, and water promptly.
