How to Keep Newborn Piglets Warm? These Practical Methods You Must Master
Warming Methods for Newborn Piglets
There are many warming methods. A warming box can be set up inside the farrowing pen, with a warming plate or infrared heat lamp placed inside (generally 40 to 50 cm from the farrowing pen). Straw, burlap sacks, sawdust, or other bedding materials can also be spread where the piglets sleep, to prevent them from sleeping on the floor. When bedding is provided, the piglets' temperature requirements are 2 to 3 degrees lower than when there is no bedding. Piglets are very sensitive to drafts; even a slight draft will significantly reduce the warming effect for the piglets. To ensure the warming effect, there must be no drafts in the farrowing house. Therefore, the farrowing house is best kept enclosed, with ventilation by exhaust fans, and when ventilating, the airflow must not blow directly onto the piglets.
