How to merge groups of commercial pigs? Methods and tips explained
Methods for merging groups of commercial pigs
The key to merging groups is to prevent the pigs from biting and fighting each other in the early stage of grouping. First, keep the weak and not the strong: leave the weaker pigs in the original pen without moving them, and move the stronger pigs out. Second, split the many and not the few: leave the pen with fewer pigs in place without moving them, and merge the larger number of pigs into the group with fewer pigs. Third, merge at night and not during the day: spray the pigs being grouped with the same substance, such as alcohol, so that they cannot distinguish each other's smell, and group them at night. Fourth, move both groups to a new pen together: when the two groups have equal numbers of pigs and similar strength, move them to a new pen at the same time. Fifth, familiarize first and merge later: keep the two groups of pigs together in a larger exercise yard for 3 to 7 days before merging the groups. Sixth, split when hungry and merge when full: split the groups when the pigs are hungry, and feed them immediately after merging the groups.
