In free-range chicken farming, chicks should be given water as early as possible
In free-range chicken farming, chicks should be given water as early as possible. A chick's first drink of water is called "first water". After the chicks arrive, get them into the brooder house as quickly as possible (especially in winter) and let them drink. For chicks that have been transported long distances or during hot weather, add 0.9% glucose saline to the drinking water for a quick replenishment; for those transported short distances, add 0.1 to 0.2% potassium permanganate to the drinking water. First water should be given early, and more than 80% of the chicks should drink at the same time. Those that respond slowly and squat without moving should be taught by hand, or stimulated to drink by clapping. Chicks should have water available around the clock.
