De-beaking tools for broiler breeders
Generally, the procedure is performed at 6 to 9 days of age. On a dedicated electric de-beaker there is a 0.44 cm small hole. The part of the beak to be removed is inserted into the hole, and a hot blade (815 degrees) cuts from top to bottom; the procedure is complete after 3 seconds of contact. This hot blade cauterizes the beak tissue so it can no longer grow. The removal site is about at the middle of the upper and lower beak or one third of the way from the tip of the beak to the nostril. When cutting, the chicken's head should be tilted slightly toward the blade so that more of the upper beak is removed than the lower beak. The de-beaking length for roosters is half that for hens, cutting only the sharp tip of the beak, to the extent that no bleeding occurs.
