Harvesting Small Thin-Skinned Watermelons
Small thin-skinned watermelons have a short maturation period, but the first batch of fruit requires about 32 days after pollination to mature due to low temperatures. The approximate maturation time can be calculated based on the pollination date, and then the harvest time can be determined by sampling and judging according to the following signs: the fine fuzz on the rind decreases, the fruit color deepens, the color is fresh green, the fruit shape becomes round and neat, the fruit surface is smooth and glossy, the stripes are clear, and the upper part of the tendrils at the same node and nearby nodes turns withered yellow. Small thin-skinned watermelons pollinated after late April will have their maturation period shortened to 20-25 days, and the later the pollination, the shorter the maturation time, so attention must be paid to adjusting the harvest time. In addition, when flowering, a string can be tied to the vine as a marker, using a different colored string each day, and when harvesting, fruits with the same marker can be harvested at the same time. After harvesting, grade them by size, then put on foam nets and pack them for market.
