How productive is China's pig industry? Now that improved foreign breeds are widely used, it is worth comparing with the production levels of European and American countries. Improved foreign-breed sows can supply 22-26 market pigs per year; European and American countries mostly reach this level, and some farms even exceed 26, so the productivity of the pig industry is fully unleashed. Before the devastating disease outbreaks in 2006, sows in China supplied about 16 market pigs per year, and large-scale pig farms about 18; as the disease spread, China's pig inventory fell by about 30%, and sows supplied fewer than 14 market pigs per year.
Undoubtedly the productivity of China's pig industry has been shackled! Sows struggle to farrow more, and even when they do, the piglets struggle to survive. What is holding back the productivity of China's pig industry? People can of course list many reasons, such as problems with raising models, problems with service systems, market problems, disease problems... It seems pig farms cannot control their own fate.
Of course, pig farms cannot control the market, but pig farms can take charge of themselves. What shackles the productivity of the pig industry is the pig farmers themselves. In my view, the main factors shackling the productivity of the pig industry lie inside the pig farm. First, breeding pigs carry serious viral and bacterial loads, becoming a reservoir of viruses and bacteria on the farm, which affects the expression of breeding pig productivity and threatens the health of their offspring; second, the sediment from the wave of mechanized pig farming still weighs down pig production to this day, such as gestation stalls, high density and other harsh micro-environments, which greatly reduce the health level of the breeding herd and even their offspring.
However, all of this can be eliminated by changing the raising conditions and environment so that the pig herd and its ecological environment coexist in a steady state. Many small farms with 50 or 100 sows in Europe and America have achieved this. This undoubtedly suggests that Chinese pig farms can also set aside numerous social factors and breed their own healthy herds. This technology is digital pig-farming technology.
1. What is digital technology
Digital technology should be familiar to Chinese people; the mobile phones, televisions and computers so closely tied to our lives are all products of digital technology. Digital technology has already been applied in many production fields, such as numerically controlled machine tools, numerically controlled cars, numerically controlled navigation..., which accomplish delicate operations and complex calculations that are difficult to control by hand and the human brain. In 2008 China will have its first digital hospital, and future wars will be digital wars. In short, digital technology will inevitably cover every field of human life and production. The digitization of pig production management is an inevitable trend of development.
Digital technology is the technology of using the two digits 0 and 1 for encoding, and expressing, transmitting and processing all information through equipment such as electronic computers, optical cables and communication satellites. Digital technology includes digital encoding, digital compression, digital transmission, digital modulation and demodulation, and other technologies. Digital technology is the core of information technology. Information media come in many forms, such as characters, sound, language and images. But these media share a common problem, namely that the amount of information is too small and it is difficult to exchange and communicate.
With the birth of digital technology, this was readily solved. Whether characters, sound, language or images; whether Chinese or a foreign language, all are encoded, expressed, transmitted and processed using the world's two shared digits 0 and 1, and at the terminal, that is, in the user's hands, they are restored exactly to the original appearance of the thing. This is multimedia technology.
Digital technology is also the foundation of software technology and intelligent technology. It can carry out 24-hour uninterrupted monitoring of controlled objects, achieving accurate measurement and fine management. The Velos system used for automated sow feeding and management is an example of digital technology applied to pig production.
2. How digital technology unlocks the productivity of the pig industry
Chinese people are not unaware of the harm gestation stalls do to breeding pigs, and the resulting decline in breeding pig performance; but they worry that after abolishing gestation stalls, group housing will bring many problems, such as how to carry out individualized feeding, restricting feed amounts, estrus detection, disease identification, vaccination and so on.
More than ten years ago, researchers in the Netherlands used digital technology to successfully develop an automated sow feeding and management system, the Velos system, based on the automated dairy cow feeding and management system (the Porcod system). Judging from more than ten years of operation, sows can produce 26.83 piglets per year, a large increase over the previous 22; the average return-to-estrus rate is only 7.4%. The system uses 50 sows as one automated feeding and management unit, so small, medium and large farms can all adopt it.
How does the Velos system unlock sow productivity?
2.1 The system installs a chip in every sow's ear tag, and the chip stores all of that sow's individual biological file information. When a breeding pig walks into the automated feeder to eat, the device automatically identifies that pig, and based on the identification information (ear tag number, backfat, gestation period, etc.) decides the daily feed amount; after eating, the pig enters the separator, and based on the identified body temperature indicators, the amount of feed eaten in a day and the number of visits to the boar, sick pigs and estrus sows are separated out, so that manual handling can be carried out promptly. Gestation stalls have lost their reason to exist here, and abolishing gestation stalls means the liberation of sow productivity.
2.2 The Velos system creates an environment of free movement for sows, not only avoiding the harm gestation stalls do to sows' cardiopulmonary function, limbs and hooves, and urogenital system, but also improving health through free exercise.
(Figure 1: The Velos system enables group housing of sows, greatly improving health levels)
2.3 The Velos system provides sows with a group-living environment; sows can choose their living space according to their own likes and dislikes, form harmonious small groups, and have behavioral, social and psychological exchanges with one another, avoiding stereotyped behavior and neurosis, perfecting sow behavior and enhancing learning and social abilities, thereby psychologically strengthening the sows' constitution.
2.4 The Velos system eliminates the four-dimensional stress brought by gestation stalls; there is no immunosuppression caused by such stress, sow health levels improve, and the culling and death rate is low. A strong constitution allows them to coexist in a steady state with pathogenic microorganisms, laying a good foundation for producing healthy piglets.
(The Velos system enables group housing of sows, greatly improving health levels)
(Stall housing causes stereotyped behavior in sows - bar biting) (Limb damage to sows caused by stall housing)
2.5 The Velos system reduces production costs
2.5.1 The system's intelligent functions can truly achieve individualized feeding, eliminating feed waste; and avoiding the rise in production costs caused by the decline in production performance from sows being too fat or too thin under manual feeding.
(In September 2008 the Velos system was successfully installed and put into use in Luzhou)
2.5.2 The system's intelligent functions can achieve 24-hour uninterrupted precise management, promptly identifying estrus sows and avoiding the rise in costs caused by missed or mistaken detection in manual estrus checking; and promptly and intelligently identifying and separating sick pigs, ensuring they are handled at the earliest moment.
2.6 The benefits brought by increased sow production
If a farm with 500 productive sows adopts the Velos system, and the number of market pigs supplied per sow per year rises from 18 to 22, then about 1,800 more finishing pigs can be marketed in a year; at a net profit of 400 yuan per pig, this can increase income by 720,000 yuan.
In addition, because delayed farrowing, difficult farrowing and postpartum complications are basically eliminated, body condition remains good, the return-to-estrus rate is extremely low, and the hidden benefits brought by an extended service life benefit the farm even more (pig farms in Europe using the Velos system have increased the average service life of sows by 1-1.5 years compared with stall housing).
2.7 The benefits brought by improved sow health
Foreign experience proves that while the Velos system improves sow health, it also benefits the offspring, and the health level of market pigs is also guaranteed, with a decline in the culling and death rate. This is of great significance for farms with high mortality among nursery pigs and/or growing pigs.
2.8 The benefits brought by reducing labor and stabilizing staff
The sow production stage is the key stage that reflects the level of the pig industry. Although China is rich in human resources, many large-scale pig farms still find themselves at a loss as keepers, especially experienced sow keepers, frequently leave. After implementing Velos system management, 750 sows need only two people to manage, and the labor intensity is reduced; employees operating an advanced management system gain a sense of achievement. Because of the reduced staff, the farm has room to offer high salaries and no longer worries about losing talent. I have seen cases where sows were managed by novices, causing breeding failures in large numbers of sows. The benefits the Velos system brings in this respect were something even the system's founders had not anticipated.
(Shashi Tongwei Xiantao Velos pig farm) (Replacement gilts being trained in the training area - photographed at Shashi Tongwei Xiantao pig farm)
2.9 Supporting technology - the benefits brought by the needle-free injection system
After group housing, vaccination becomes a difficult problem. The needle-free injection system that emerged in response not only readily solves it, but also brings hidden benefits from sparing the pig herd injection stress (3-5 days of reduced feed intake, pain stress), avoiding cross-infection, reliable vaccination, saving manpower, reducing labor intensity and so on, and it also saves vaccine (injecting with a needle-free injector uses half the dose of needle injection, and can also achieve the same antibody level produced by a full dose of needle injection).
2.10 Safety benefits brought by increased productivity and reduced sow inventory.
If China's sow productivity is raised from the current 16 to 26, then only 239 sows need to be kept to reach the production target formerly achieved with 388 sows. Ecosystem theory tells us that more pigs means more disease; when sow inventory falls by 38%, the risk of whole-herd infection is undoubtedly greatly reduced, and of course it also brings the cost savings of keeping 149 fewer sows.
3. The profound impact of the advanced cultural connotations of digital technology on China's pig industry.
More than 2,000 years ago, China's traditional cultural thinking was already ahead of its time in its attitude toward the biological community and ecological environment in which humans live, and it was even more in line with objective laws. Confucius's "The master fished with a line but not with a net; he shot but not at roosting birds" embodies the ecological view of taking from nature in moderation and nurturing and protecting the environment. In the "Collected Works of Liu Hedong" there is a piece titled "The Story of the Tree Planter Guo Tuotuo", which recounts a tree-planting expert, Guo Tuotuo; the trees he planted all survived, and "grew large and luxuriant, fruited early and flourished", and even when others "peeked and imitated" him they could not match him, and the wealthy families of the capital competed to invite him to their homes to plant trees. The secret of Guo Tuotuo's skill in planting trees was that he understood "the nature of planting trees": when planting, he made "the roots want to spread, the earth want to be level, the soil want to be the original, the tamping want to be firm"; after planting, "do not move it, do not worry about it", "do not harm its growth", relying on "its heaven being whole", in a word, "following the heaven of the tree to bring out its nature". From this it can be seen that the ancients advocated respect among species and respect for the species' original habits; only in this way can humans coexist harmoniously with all species, and thereby benefit humanity itself.
Unfortunately, since the concept of mechanized pig farming was introduced to China, while absorbing the essence, Chinese people also swallowed the dregs; the traditional scene of harmonious coexistence between humans and pigs disappeared, and people completely treated pigs as pigs, not as an indispensable and close species in human life; pigs, in an environment that changed the living habits they had for millions of years, endured humiliation and bore heavy burdens to create wealth for humans, until one day the underground fire erupted; not only in China, but in many countries the disease spread, and pigs resisted with death, ultimately turning into the consequence that pigs no longer treated humans as humans either, and many pig farms ended tragically in losses and bankruptcy.
The Velos system liberates the mother machine of pig production - the sow - giving them a living environment closer to their nature, while also achieving the human goal of steering sows in a targeted way; this fact, from humans to pigs and ultimately from pigs to humans, embodies the perfect combination of China's traditional cultural thinking and modern technology.
Driven by the high technology of the Velos system, the process of specialized development in related industries of China's pig industry will inevitably accelerate. Pig farms will no longer mix their own feed; specialized feed companies can mix better feed than the farm itself and deliver it to the farm's feed silos; pig farms will also no longer set up scarce veterinary services; specialized veterinary service companies will formulate high-quality service plans, regularly vaccinate pig farms with needle-free injection systems, and promptly diagnose and treat sick pigs... By then pig farmers will raise pigs with ease! Make money with ease!
The coincidence between the advanced cultural connotations of digital technology and China's traditional culture precisely shows that correct ideas are universally applicable and are the product of painful reflection by all humanity. Digital technology will inevitably bring an unprecedented storm of corporate revolution to China's pig industry, liberating the productivity of China's pig industry from the concept of mechanized pig farming; China's pig farmers should bravely welcome the arrival of this epoch-making era.
