CCTV Channel 7 interviews a specialized fermentation bed pig farmer
CCTV interviews a specialized fermentation bed pig farmer. Reporter: Hey, strange, this pigpen doesn't have much of a smell. Just now when I passed those pigpens, from far away I could smell that indescribable odor. What's going on here? Let me find someone to ask.

Factory Director Chen: This kind of farming is a new method, called the fermentation bed pig farming method.

Reporter: Fermentation bed pig farming method?

Factory Director Chen: That's right.

Reporter: How is this technology different from the pig farming methods we used in the past?

Factory Director Chen: With the original traditional pig farming method, all the pig manure and urine stayed inside, and once you flushed it with water, it went outside, causing pollution to the environment. Our factory was listed by the Zhenjiang Municipal People's Government as a unit required to rectify within a deadline. But now that we've adopted this technology, the environmental protection is better, and besides that, the quality of the pigs has improved, and the meat sells for a higher price.

Ha, every potter praises his own pot. Is this technology really that good? Let me find a worker and ask.

Reporter: Young man, how is it raising pigs now with this fermentation bed pig farming technology?

Worker: With this technology, we workers have less trouble.

Reporter: How is it less trouble?

Worker: The pig manure and urine, we don't need to deal with them at all, we just add feed and that's it.

If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I really wouldn't believe it - raising pigs without having to clean up the pig manure. That saves a huge amount of trouble. But what puzzled Wenwei was, the pigs eat, drink, and relieve themselves all in the pen, so why doesn't the pen stink or get dirty, and even though the weather is quite hot, why aren't there any flies?

Reporter: I never imagined that in my life I'd be sitting inside a pigpen chatting. This is Division Chief Shen, the person who introduced the technology. Let me ask, what exactly is this technology about?

Division Chief Shen: This fermentation bed pig farming, just like its name suggests, uses organic bedding to build a fermentation bed, uses the fermentation bed to absorb the manure, and also uses the microorganisms in the fermentation bed to break down the manure and convert the feed.

Once the manure is broken down, the smell naturally disappears. So it turns out this is all thanks to microorganisms. Division Chief Shen and his team found through experiments that it takes only 3 days for the manure to be broken down by microorganisms into very fine powder, disappearing without a trace. At the same time, the manure provides nutrients to the microbes, and the beneficial bacteria keep multiplying, forming mycelium. These high-protein substances then become a delicacy for the pigs. When the pigs eat them, it not only helps digestion but also boosts immunity. The entire fermentation bed forms a perfect little "biosphere," which can be called zero-emission, pollution-free organic agriculture.
Division Chief Shen: Look at this bed, it's loose and soft, and doesn't stink.

Reporter: Very dry.

Division Chief Shen: Like sand.

Reporter: Let me smell it.

Division Chief Shen: Does it stink?

Reporter: It doesn't stink, there's an earthy smell.

Division Chief Shen: There's a bit of the fragrance of soil microorganisms, no stench of manure.

Reporter: How thick is this?

Division Chief Shen: The thickness is about 80 to 90 cm.

Reporter: I've noticed it's quite hot here.

Division Chief Shen: Right, fermentation is going on underneath.

Reporter: Really, it's quite hot.

Division Chief Shen: The fermentation process generates heat. After it heats up, a large amount of moisture in the material evaporates, and the odor is broken down by the microorganisms, so the bed is very clean.

Reporter: That's why we can sit here and talk.

Division Chief Shen: That's why we can sit here, and our backsides won't get dirty either.

Pigs raised on fermentation beds return to a "native, natural" environment. They're in a good mood and aren't shy around strangers. When Wenwei came, they treated him like a visiting friend, untying his shoelaces and busy scratching his itches. When the pigs are happy, their appetites are hearty, their bodies are great, and they eat everything with relish. When they have nothing to do, they run around playfully, all with glossy coats and muscular bodies.

My colleague Wenwei, after spending most of the day enjoying happy times with the pigs, also figured out a few things.

Reporter: I've found that this bedding bed has three functions. First, a trampoline.

Reporter: Second, a Simmons mattress.

Reporter: Third, an electric blanket. Look how happy it makes them!

Reporter: The bedding bed just now was quite fun. What material is it made of?

Division Chief Shen: This one, we just built a new one. Let me take you to see it, okay? The material for this fermentation bed is mainly wood shavings, plus clean soil and salt. The soil is required to be clean soil that hasn't used chemical fertilizers or pesticides, because there are more microorganisms in it. Also, the salt should be coarse salt.

The bedding is mainly wood shavings, accounting for 90%, and the other 10% is soil and a small amount of salt. Wood shavings are very loose and soft, and can absorb moisture; adding coarse salt helps break down the wood shavings.

Reporter: Okay, now our fermentation bed bedding is ready. I should carry out the last step, which is also the most critical step, which is to evenly spread these bacterial cultures into the fermentation bed. This bacterial culture, let's see what it looks like, and take a sniff - it has a smell like steamed buns that have gone sour. Just now Division Chief Shen told me that this bacterial culture is collected from the soil, then cultured in the laboratory, and it becomes like this. Now I need to carefully and evenly spread these bacterial cultures. Time to get to work.

After mixing the bacterial culture and bedding evenly, let it ferment for 4 or 5 days, and then the pigs can get on the bed.

Reporter: What about the height needed for this bedding bed?

Factory Director Chen: The height is generally 80 cm to 90 cm. In the south, where the groundwater level is relatively high, we generally use the above-ground style. If in the north, where the groundwater level is relatively low, the underground style can be used.

The height is the same, 80 to 90 cm.

Pigs entering the pen must first have their internal parasites thoroughly eliminated.

Whether the fermentation bed works well is also related to the construction of the pig house. Generally, the pig house is required to face north with its back to the south. This kind of pen has good lighting, which is good for fermentation; and it has good ventilation, so it doesn't stink and has no mosquitoes or flies. If you raise them in a greenhouse, it saves both trouble and money. Because the greenhouse is cheap to build, and the microclimate is easier to regulate. In winter, the lighting is good and it's warm, so the pigs can safely overwinter; in summer, put down the shade film and roll up the surrounding skirt film to ventilate and cool down.

Reporter: I've also noticed that this soil seems a bit darker than the soil I just looked at.

Acting Director Dai: These pigs have already been raised for two cycles, and the wood shavings have already been broken down by the indigenous bacteria, so the color is coffee-colored.

Experts say that not only will the pig manure and urine never need to be cleaned up, but even the fermentation bed bedding won't need to be replaced for 10 or 20 years. Tell me, isn't this kind of worry-free and cost-effective good thing something you couldn't find even if you searched with a lantern? But Wenwei still had one worry.

Reporter: Is this bedding bed easy to manage?

Acting Director Dai: Easy to manage, very easy to manage.

Reporter: How do you manage it?

Acting Director Dai: Just normally, once a month, we spray a nutrient solution once.
The nutrient solution is a specially cultured active agent, mixed with water at a ratio of 1 to 300, and sprayed on the bed surface to increase the vitality of soil microorganisms and speed up the degradation and digestion of waste. Also, when you usually find that pig manure has piled up quite a lot, spread it toward the empty areas, to facilitate full decomposition.

Acting Director Dai: There's another thing - the surface of the bacterial bed can't be too dry, that is, it should stay very loose but there shouldn't be any flying dust, no dust rising up, otherwise the pigs easily get respiratory diseases.

Stocking density: If too many pigs are raised per unit area, the fermentation state of the bed will decline, and it won't be able to quickly degrade and digest the pig manure and urine. Generally, each pig occupies 1.2 to 1.5 sq m.

Reporter: These past two days, I've found that this technology of ours is indeed quite trouble-saving. But, a person like me just wants to spend less money, earn more money, and not put in too much effort. Tell me, is a person like me suited to raising pigs? Help me calculate the economic account.

Acting Director Dai: I think this technology is very suitable for you. Now let's calculate the account. First, this kind of pig farming saves a lot of labor. Since there's no need to clean manure, if it were conventional farming, one person could only raise 500 head, but this can raise 1000 head, saving 50% labor.

Also, after pigs eat the bacteria, their constitution is good, they don't get sick, and basically no medicine is needed, saving medical costs - one yuan per pig; also, it can save part of the feed, saving 20-30% feed.

Acting Director Dai: One particularly important point is water. With conventional farming, a large amount of water is needed for flushing, but with this pig farming, only the water for drinking is enough, so a lot of water is saved, saving 90% water.

He should still find out how many pig farms in China actually use water flushing.

How many years can it be used........................................
--------------------------------------
Under normal circumstances, it can be used for 3-5 years

Succeed by the media, fail by the media!!!!!
--------------------------------------
The media is a public service platform. We must rely on our own eyes to judge the direction of things.
--------------------------------------
Media?????????............
--------------------------------------
This is an old story from years ago. Actually, as for how the fermentation bed is, farmers' understanding is different from the media's. This doesn't prove anything. The media isn't professional, and the people interviewed were all sellers of bacterial cultures, so it doesn't prove anything either. We need to be objective and seek truth. There's a lot of material on this, and the cost of building a fermentation bed can be calculated.
Although many people are promoting fermentation beds now, farmers should still keep their eyes wide open, so as not to be fooled!!!
--------------------------------------
Do what you say, and hawk whatever you sell. Pig farming should be pig-centered. When there's a conflict between people and pigs, people should obey the pigs!!!
--------------------------------------
Keep your eyes wide open, and strive hard!!

But some people say the fermentation method really isn't that good. I don't know where the problem lies.
