What is bedding? It is the wood shavings or other materials spread out when raising livestock.
In theory, all organic materials can be used to make bedding, but from the perspective of use efficiency and practical application results, materials with high carbon supply strength, balanced and lasting carbon supply capacity, and good permeability and adsorption should generally be selected as the main raw materials, such as wood shavings, rice bran, peat, and straw powder; at the same time, to ensure the progress and effect of biological fermentation during the bedding production process, other raw materials are often selected as auxiliary materials.Bedding raw materials can be divided into different types according to different classification methods.
For example, when divided by usage amount, they can be classified into main materials and auxiliary materials:
1. Main materials. As the name implies, these are the main raw materials for making bedding. Usually this type of raw material accounts for more than 60% of the material proportion and is composed of one or several raw materials. Commonly used main materials include wood shavings, peat, straw powder, peanut shells, and mushroom residue.
2. Auxiliary materials. These are mainly some raw materials used to adjust the moisture, pH, and permeability of the material, composed of one or several raw materials. Usually this type of raw material accounts for no more than 40% of the entire material proportion. Commonly used auxiliary materials include rice husk powder, wheat bran, oil cake, and cornmeal.
If divided by the properties of the raw materials, they can be classified into carbon-based raw materials, nitrogen-based raw materials, and conditioner-type raw materials:
1. Carbon-based raw materials. These refer to raw materials with high organic carbon content. This type of raw material is mostly used as the main material of bedding, such as wood shavings, rice husks, straw powder, peat, mushroom residue, furfural residue, etc.
2. Nitrogen-based raw materials. These usually refer to raw materials with high organic matter content and below, and are mostly used as auxiliary materials for bedding, such as fresh pig manure from pig farms, sugarcane filter mud from sugar factories in the south, filter mud from breweries, etc. This type of raw material is usually used to adjust the C/N ratio.
3. Conditioner-type raw materials. These mainly refer to raw materials used to adjust pH, such as quicklime, gypsum, and dilute acid; sometimes raw materials used to adjust C/P, such as superphosphate and phosphate rock powder, are also classified as conditioners; in addition, they also include some energy conditioners, such as brown sugar or molasses. The addition of this type of organic matter can increase the energy of the bedding mixture, causing beneficial microorganisms to rapidly multiply to a huge population in a short time, so it is also commonly known as a "detonator".
