Poisoning....

Signs of a sow before farrowing:

1. Changes in the udder and teats: In sows, 15-20 days before farrowing, a clear boundary begins to appear between the base of the udder and the abdominal wall; as the due date approaches, the udder gradually swells and droops from back to front. About 3 days before farrowing, the teats spread outward; when the teats on both sides are extremely swollen, the skin is tight and red, and the teats are arranged in an A shape and shiny, sometimes with a small amount of bedding straw sticking to them (this phenomenon is not obvious on a farrowing crate), this is the sign that farrowing is imminent.

2. Changes in the milk in the teats: About 3 days before farrowing, a small amount of clear liquid can be squeezed from the middle two pairs of teats; about 1 day before farrowing, 1-2 drops of white colostrum can be squeezed out; about half a day before farrowing, 1-2 drops of white colostrum can be squeezed from the front teats. When thick, thread-like colostrum can be gently squeezed from the last pair of teats, this is the sign that farrowing is imminent.

3. Changes in the vulva: 3-5 days before farrowing, the vulva begins to swell and gradually becomes flushed; a few hours before farrowing, most sows discharge a small amount of mucus; when the sow lies on her side, her tail swings, the anus begins to strain, and most sows discharge blood-red fetal fluid, this is the sign that farrowing is imminent.

4. Changes in the pelvic area: In sows, 7-14 days before farrowing, the pelvic ligaments begin to soften; by 12-36 hours before farrowing, the rear edge of the ligaments becomes very soft and loose, the outline disappears so that the area around the tail base becomes soft, until the tail base sinks in; this is the sign that farrowing is imminent.

5. Frequent defecation and urination: 6-12 hours before farrowing, sows begin to pass soft, persimmon-cake-shaped feces, and the frequency of urination increases; the closer to farrowing, the persimmon-cake-shaped soft feces go from large to small, the frequency of urination goes from few to many, and the volume of urine goes from more to less.

6. Mental state: About 12 hours before farrowing, sows begin to appear depressed and restless, pacing about; the closer to farrowing, the more irritable the temperament, and the more frequently they stand up and lie down.

7. Appetite: About 12 hours before farrowing, sows begin to have a poor appetite, and as farrowing approaches they have no appetite at all.

Through the above points, everyone should have gained some understanding of the signs before a sow farrows; as long as three of the above signs appear, that is the sign that farrowing is imminent.

Vomiting before farrowing in sows may be caused by exposure to wind, or by drug poisoning, or by feeding too much feed before farrowing, etc. Judging from the color of the sow's vomit, the sow herself has a slight stomach disorder, and during farrowing the sow is weak; glucose should be injected intravenously to replenish the sow's energy, and oxytocin added to induce labor. In the future, halving the feed amount 3 days before farrowing can avoid this!
