How effective is fly maggot as feed? Explained clearly in one article
The effectiveness of fly maggot as feed
Fly maggot meal has a crude protein content as high as 56%-63% (average 59.5%), fat 13%, ash 7%, carbohydrates 3.1%. As a high-protein feed, the nutritional level of fly maggots can rival the best imported Peruvian fishmeal, being 1.3 times that of soybean cake and 1.9 times that of bone-and-meat meal. Fresh maggots contain 15% crude protein and 5.8% crude fat, and can not only be directly fed to conventional breeds of pigs, chickens, ducks and fish, but are also the best live bait for special animals such as shrimp, crabs, eels, rice field eels, American frogs, bullfrogs, snakehead fish, spotted fish and turtles. Fly maggots are easy to breed, low in cost and short in cycle. 2000 grams of manure can produce 500 grams of fly maggots. One cubic meter of fly cage can produce about 150 grams per day. With 10 fly cages having upper, middle and lower tiers, 20-25 kg of fresh maggots can be obtained per day. To produce 1000 grams of fresh maggots, the total cost is only 0.14 yuan. Calculated at 4 kg of fresh maggots equivalent to 1000 grams of fishmeal, it is only 30% of the price of fishmeal. According to tests by the Beijing Feed Research Institute, on a breeding area of 18 sq m, the average daily output of fly maggots was 9.75 kg. The institute used self-bred and self-raised fly maggot feed to feed chickens in an experiment, adding 10% fly maggots to the feed, while the control group's feed added 10% fishmeal; the results showed that the former increased the egg production rate by 20.3% and improved feed conversion by 15.8% compared with the latter. Feeding 100 grams of fly maggots to piglets increased weight by 7% and reduced cost by 13.2% compared with feeding an equal amount of Peruvian fishmeal. After the breeding farm of the Guangxi Labor Reform Administration achieved large-scale production of fly maggots, the average daily output of fresh maggots was 300 kg. Feeding fresh maggots daily at 5% of the body weight of Egyptian catfish increased the fish body weight from 65 grams per fish to 175 grams after 10 days, with a weight gain rate 41% higher than the control group fed conventional feed. Using maggot meal to replace an equal amount of fishmeal in preparing pig compound feed, the test group's pigs increased weight by 5.1%, and the protein content of pig lean meat increased by 5%; using maggot meal to replace fishmeal (equal amount) in preparing chicken feed and feeding 1-month-old broilers, the survival rate increased by 9%, weight gain increased by 20%, feed cost decreased by 7%, and feed was saved by 20%-40%. A farmer in Fenglin Village, Butou Township, Xingguo County, Jiangxi Province, used bamboo strips to weave fly cages and developed cage rearing of flies to 14 cages, producing 30 kg of fly maggots per day, enough feed for 1000 soft-shelled turtles. Since "weaving" flies into the ecological chain, the cost investment for raising soft-shelled turtles has been reduced by nearly half, while the annual output value has doubled compared with before.
