Shrimp ponds hit by disaster, feed companies complain bitterly, issues such as agricultural insurance draw attention

At noon yesterday, the warm sunlight accelerated the rotting of the freeze-killed shrimp. Most shrimp farmers began to give up picking and salvaging before the rescue-priced clearance sale, while shrimp buyers who continued to be busy also found that the quality of the freeze-killed shrimp had noticeably declined, refusing the Macrobrachium rosenbergii (giant freshwater prawn) brought by some shrimp farmers, and completely refusing the smaller-sized whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei).

◆Most shrimp farmers give up rescue picking and salvaging

Yesterday afternoon, at the temporary shrimp collection point in Guangfeng Community, West District, the reporter met shrimp farmer Cheng Jinping, who was probably the last shrimp farmer to sell shrimp cheaply to a shrimp buyer. In order to sell dozens of snakeskin bags of freeze-killed shrimp, she said both pairs of her shoes had gotten stuck in the black mud of the shrimp pond, and she ran barefoot to the shrimp collection point, afraid that if she ran too slowly she would not be able to sell them, and if she could not sell them they might have to be dumped, and she did not even know where to dump them.

Shrimp farmer A Hui said that after selling these shrimp cheaply, even if the shrimp in his own pond had not rotted, he would no longer pick and salvage them. When asked why, A Hui did the math for the reporter. Hiring one person to pick shrimp for a day costs at least 150 yuan in wages, and one person can only pick 100 kg of shrimp a day. Selling at 2 yuan per kg, the most one can earn in a day is 50 yuan, and meals must also be provided and the person sent to the shrimp pond.

A Hui sold more than 800 kg of shrimp that day. Because he did not sell early, he missed the price of 3 yuan per kg and only sold at 2 yuan per kg, and he regretted it very much. Regarding such a low price, some shrimp farmers expressed understanding, while others expressed helplessness. Those who understood said that if shrimp buyers had not come to purchase in time, the freeze-killed shrimp would probably have been worth nothing, and they could only watch them rot; those who felt helpless said their fate was in the hands of the shrimp buyers, and whatever the buyers said was the price.

◆Disaster highlights blind spots in insurance claims

Mr. Chen of Longping Village, West District, said that their village has several hundred mu of shrimp farms, and the losses were quite severe. He said he had two ponds. Based on previous years, each mu of shrimp farm could earn at least more than 1,000 yuan, but now all the shrimp had frozen to death, and each mu would lose about 10,000 yuan. Speaking of shrimp farm insurance, Mr. Chen felt very regretful. He had no awareness of buying insurance. If he had bought insurance at the time, his losses would not be so severe now.

Mr. Chen said that not a single shrimp farming household in their village had purchased shrimp farm insurance.

Mr. Liang is a local of Guangfeng. This year he contracted four shrimp farms, with output at least above 5,000 kg. Regarding buying insurance, Mr. Liang was somewhat angry: he had approached several insurance companies, but not a single insurance company was willing to guarantee them, because shrimp farming is a high-risk industry, and insurance companies refused them coverage on the grounds of high risk and a high payout ratio. In order to operate the shrimp farms, Mr. Liang had also borrowed 180,000 yuan from relatives and friends, and now all of it had been lost.

◆Feed companies complain endlessly

A large number of Macrobrachium rosenbergii (giant freshwater prawns) were frozen to death, and feed manufacturing and operating companies were hit quite hard. The owner of Yueda Feed Store in Guangfeng Community said that previously in this season he could sell more than 5,000 yuan of feed per day, but when the shrimp farmers' shrimp encountered the cold wave, the feed industry likewise encountered a "cold wave." From the 16th, when shrimp froze to death on a large scale, until now, his feed store had basically had no business, and the shrimp farmers owed him more than 100,000 yuan in feed payments. With the debts impossible to collect for the time being, it would be very difficult for the feed store to operate. What made him even more pessimistic was that next year more shrimp farmers would buy feed on credit, because the shrimp farmers had no money left, so the feed industry would also suffer along with them.

Mr. Wu, owner of Guanglian Winter Greenhouse Agricultural Film Store in West District, said that this year's plastic agricultural film business was greatly affected by the freeze-killed shrimp incident. She had been in the agricultural film wholesale business for more than 4 years and encountered this kind of thing for the first time. In previous years, more than 20,000 yuan of agricultural film could be sold per day, but now the agricultural film could only be piled up in the warehouse. "Last year, the agricultural film business was very good, and shrimp farmers all liked plastic agricultural film of relatively good quality and greater thickness. This year she specially purchased some agricultural film with high cost and good quality to prepare for shrimp farmers to buy, but who would have thought that this year all the shrimp would freeze to death, and the plastic agricultural film she purchased from the manufacturer had high cost and high price, while vegetable farmers and fish farmers would not buy it. Ms. Wu was very helpless.
