Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (Rabbit Plague)
Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (Rabbit Plague)
[Characteristics]
The pathogen is Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease Virus, and the main routes of transmission are the digestive tract, respiratory tract and skin wounds. It occurs mostly in young and adult rabbits; kittens under 40 days of age and some aged rabbits are generally not easily infected, and suckling kittens do not develop the disease.
[Symptoms and Necropsy Lesions]
In the most acute form of the disease, the rabbit suddenly falls to the ground, convulses and dies with a scream; in the acute form there is panting, and finally convulsions and death with a cry, with a course ranging from several hours to two days; the acute symptoms are sudden onset, short course and high body temperature; the chronic form has a longer course, with listlessness, and some rabbits can survive and recover. Blood often flows from the natural orifices such as the mouth, nostrils, anus, ear canals and vulva. The upper respiratory tract mucosa appears red due to congestion and haemorrhage, most noticeably in the trachea. The lungs are congested and oedematous, red in colour, with haemorrhagic spots. There is often fluid in the pericardial sac, with haemorrhage on the inner and outer heart membranes. The liver is congested and enlarged, dark red or red-yellow, and haemorrhages and greyish-white necrotic foci may also be seen. The kidneys are enlarged, dark red, purplish red or purplish black, with haemorrhagic spots and greyish-white spots visible under the capsule.
[Prevention and Treatment Measures]
Prevention: Regularly vaccinate with Shen's propolis inactivated vaccine containing rabbit plague.
Treatment:
1. When an outbreak occurs, disinfect dead rabbits and bury them deeply or burn them. For rabbits presumed healthy, use Shen's rabbit plague propolis inactivated vaccine 4-5ml for emergency vaccination, and add Qingwen Baidu San to the feed for 5 to 7 consecutive days, while providing electrolytic multivitamins in the drinking water.
2. Contaminated sites, cages and utensils should be disinfected with 2% hot alkaline water or with Shandong Shen's newly developed special disinfectant for rabbit houses - Junkexing.
