Zero mortality experience in cage-raised rabbits, a large-scale rabbit breeder shares insights
A large-scale rabbit breeder talks about zero mortality experience in cage-raised rabbits
1. Heat dissipation and temperature control.
Rex rabbits have extremely underdeveloped sweat glands and dense fur, so they are very sensitive to heat. Every summer, their appetite decreases, disease resistance and reproductive capacity decline, and they are highly prone to heatstroke or even death. Plant some vine-type plants such as melons, beans, grapes and pumpkins around the rabbit house to prevent direct sunlight, and also apply a layer of lime slurry to the outer walls of the rabbit house so that sunlight does not shine directly onto the rabbit cages; open-air rabbit houses should also have a shade shed, with doors and windows opened to allow air convection.
2. Cleverly adjust the feed.
In terms of feed structure, in summer more green and succulent feed should be given, with an appropriate increase in protein-rich concentrate and as little high-energy feed as possible. To prevent diarrhea, also feed some high-quality green hay and provide plenty of clean cool water (best with 1%-2% salt added to supplement salt), allowing them to eat and drink freely; in terms of feeding method, because summer is hot, during the day most Rex rabbits lie still, and feeding and activity are concentrated at night, so one should "feed breakfast early, lunch fine and small, dinner full, and feed more grass at night" to increase their feed intake and promote growth and development.
3. Stop breeding.
In midsummer, the semen quality of male rabbits is low and female rabbits do not come into estrus normally. Breeding during this period very easily results in infertility, and even if mating is successful, the newborn rabbits have poor body condition and many illnesses, with a low survival rate. Persist in stopping breeding and reproduction during the two midsummer months from mid-June to mid-August, so that male and female rabbits can rest well and reduce physical consumption, which is very beneficial for autumn breeding.
4. Carefully feed young rabbits.
Young rabbits are very difficult to raise in summer. After birth, they should suckle colostrum as early as possible, and the number of young in the litter should be adjusted in time, generally 6-8 per litter is suitable. After young rabbits start eating, promptly administer 0.5% licorice water by dropper, adding to every 100 ml of liquid 10 g brown sugar, 10 g glucose, 0.5 g compound diaveridine and 0.5 g furazolidone, feeding twice a day, 5 ml per rabbit; pay attention to cooling and mosquito prevention, prevent harm from natural enemies such as dogs and cats, and keep the bedding clean and dry.
5. Strictly prevent epidemics.
Summer has high temperature and high humidity, and Rex rabbits are prone to intestinal infectious diseases and coccidiosis. Starting before the dog days, some chopped plantain, dandelion, scallions and garlic can be added to the feed. Orally administer 2 tablets each of diaveridine and robenidine per rabbit per day, feeding continuously for two weeks, then stopping for one week, with the therapeutic dose doubled, which can effectively prevent and control the occurrence of intestinal infectious diseases and coccidiosis; use pediatric calming medicine, oxytetracycline powder and Rendan pills mixed into the feed to feed young rabbits, and often feed some mung bean and white sugar soup, Huoxiang Zhengqi water, etc., which can prevent heatstroke.
