How are orchids classified in China? Can flowering time be controlled?
China has a great many kinds of terrestrial orchids, classified according to flowering season: those flowering between February and March with one flower per stem are called Chunlan (Spring Orchid); those flowering between April and May with several flowers per stem are called Huilan (Hui Orchid); those flowering before June to July with several flowers per stem are called Xialan (Summer Orchid); those flowering between August and October with many flowers per stem are called Qiulan (Autumn Orchid); those flowering in the first lunar month with many flowers per stem are called Baosuilan (New Year Orchid). The same genus has 30 species, usually blooming once a year at their natural flowering time. Among them, the Jianlan group, also called Xiahui or Qiuhui, flowers from July to October (December), has a long cultivation history and many varieties; its variants include 'Dayebai' and 'Qinggeng Siji', which flower 2 to 3 times from July to October, hence it is also called Sijilan (Four Seasons Orchid). Under natural conditions, from flower bud differentiation to flowering, plants are constrained by their own hereditary nature and external environmental factors, so flowering times differ. Using environmental factors to control flowering time has already been achieved for chrysanthemums, peonies, camellias and others, but no scientific reports on orchids have yet been seen.
