When is the best time to move a potted white magnolia indoors? Can it bloom in winter?
White magnolia, commonly known as bailan, originates from subtropical regions and prefers a humid, warm, semi-shaded environment. It is an acid-loving flowering tree, and in regions such as Northeast China, North China, and Northwest China it is mostly grown as a potted plant. It should be moved to a bright spot in a greenhouse before frost (when the temperature drops below 6°C). Before bringing it indoors, apply alum fertilizer water 1 to 2 times; it can still bloom under conditions of above 18°C during the day and no lower than 10°C at night. Under home conditions, before bringing it indoors, dig open the soil around the edges of the pot, apply a 1:0.2 cake-alum powder fertilizer, sprinkle a thin ring of it, then cover it back with the original soil. Then place it on a balcony or in a sunny spot indoors, and persist in spraying water to wash the leaves at noon; if the temperature is suitable, it can likewise bloom. When relative air humidity is insufficient, watch for damage from scale insects and mites.
