What are the disadvantages of propagating Chinese juniper 'Kaizuca' from seed? How should the seeds be stored? When should they be sown?
Chinese juniper 'Kaizuca' is a branch sport of Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis), with a free and natural branch form, making it a fine ornamental tree species. Grafted seedlings grow quickly and can well maintain their morphological characteristics, so they are widely used. Seed propagation gives unstable morphological characteristics and cannot preserve the good form of the mother plant; sown seedlings have a loose tree shape and sparse branches and leaves, with low ornamental value, so it is not often used. If you want to sow, you can stratify the seeds in sand after collecting them, take them out the following spring and soak them, and when the seed coat splits and they begin to germinate, sow them in drills, covering with 2-3 cm of soil and keeping the soil on the moist side. It is not demanding about soil, and ordinary garden soil is fine for sowing.
