What is the best time and method for grafting ornamental peach varieties?
When is the right time to graft ornamental peach varieties, and what is the best method?
For grafting ornamental peach, June to July is the best time; the bud grafting method gives the highest survival rate and also the most ideal growth. The rootstock should be a seedling peach (Prunus persica) grown from spring-sown seed of the current year. Three to five days before grafting, irrigate the nursery bed thoroughly to make bark peeling easier. For the scion, select plump, pointed leaf buds from the branches of superior plants. Flower buds often cluster several together, are oval in shape, and are covered with abundant white silky hairs, so they should be avoided by mistake. A bud grafting knife can be used, performing a "T"-shaped or square bud graft, tied with narrow strips of plastic film; the survival rate should reach over 95%. This method is also suitable for grafting Jiangtao peach, Shouxingtao peach, purple-leaf peach, and fruiting peach, among others.
