Ma Juan is a high school student in our village. Because she did not get into university after graduating from high school, she went home to help her parents with some farm work. Once the new year was over, she planned to go out to work and ease the burden on her family.

As it happened, this year the state encouraged vigorous development of agricultural planting and advocated environmental protection. So the plants given to our village to grow were green Sichuan pepper and this thing called finger citron. For such an unknown fruit, planting it in the first year still left people somewhat puzzled. To be honest, they did not even know how to eat the fruit they grew? They only knew it could be sold for money.

The knowledgeable Ma Juan looked up information and only then learned the origin of this plant's fruit. When the finger citron fruit matures, its carpels separate, forming slender curved fruit segments shaped like fingers, hence the name finger citron. It blooms for the first time from the Spring Equinox to Qingming, often with many male flowers, and the fruit it sets is relatively small. It blooms another time around the Start of Summer, and the fruit matures in September to October.

The finger citron can be used as medicine. Its peel is bright yellow, wrinkled and glossy, with a split top that often opens like fingers, hence the name finger citron. The flesh is white and seedless. It is usually used as traditional Chinese medicine, or grown as an ornamental plant because of its unusual fruit shape. The finger citron is widely made into preserved fruit for eating and for sale.

Finger citron can reproduce the next generation through cuttings, grafting and air layering. The time for cuttings is from late June to early to mid-July. Cut branches from a robust mother plant as cuttings. In about 1 month they can take root, and in two months they sprout. After sprouting, they can be planted out. Long-branch cuttings can also be used: take robust 3-4 year old branches and cut them into 50 cm long cuttings.

With the technical guidance invited by the government, and under the careful management of Ma Juan and her parents, the few trial-planted finger citrons had a bumper harvest. For farmers who had just come into contact with this variety, the strangely shaped fruit was somewhat unfamiliar. They had not even figured out how to eat it? But there was no worry about sales. On the very day the fruit was picked just after ripening, buyers took it away at a price of 70 yuan per jin. The most awkward thing is not knowing how to eat it. Do you know?
