Increasing the vitamin C content in feed can prevent and treat fish diseases
To determine the effects of vitamin C on the growth and pathology of diseased Nile tilapia, Egyptian aquaculture researchers conducted an experiment. The test fish had an average body weight of 20g and were fed diets supplemented with 0mg/kg, 50mg/kg, 150mg/kg, 250mg/kg, 500mg/kg, and 1000mg/kg of vitamin C respectively for 12 weeks. It was found that fish fed a diet with no vitamin C supplementation grew poorly; the addition of 50mg/kg of vitamin C prevented deficiency symptoms in the fish; and the addition of 150mg/kg improved the weight gain, feed conversion ratio, specific growth rate, and protein efficiency of the tilapia. The protein content of the fish body increased with higher levels of vitamin C supplementation in the feed, while the fat content decreased. The vitamin C content in the fish tissues, in descending order, was spleen, liver, muscle, and kidney. When tilapia infected with bacteria were fed diets containing different levels of vitamin C, the mortality rate of diseased fish not fed a diet supplemented with vitamin C was over 90%, while the survival rate of diseased fish fed a diet supplemented with 1000mg/kg of vitamin C was over 90%, and the pathological infection symptoms gradually disappeared .
