New hurdles for Chinese aquatic product exports to the US
Aquatic product exports to the US face new hurdles again
Southern Rural Daily News: The US Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009 (hereinafter the "Act"), passed by a vote in the US House of Representatives, will take effect at the end of this year. The Act sets strict rules on the registration, fees, third-party certification and testing, and mandatory establishment of food defense plans for companies exporting food to the US, and may have a major impact on China's aquatic product exports to the US.
It is understood that the Act mainly strengthens five areas: First, company registration and fees, requiring companies registered with the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) to pay registration fees of varying amounts. The 2010 registration fee is 500 US dollars and may be adjusted each year thereafter. Second, inspections of companies are strengthened; products of companies that delay, restrict or refuse FDA inspections will be regarded as "adulterated food." Third, third-party inspection and certification are strengthened, and the FDA has the right to inspect laboratory accreditation bodies and third-party laboratories. Fourth, risk control is strengthened; all registered food companies must formulate and implement food defense plans. The FDA will classify food production and processing companies involved with the US as high-risk companies, which must be inspected at least once every 6-12 months. Fifth, the food recall system is strengthened, authorizing the FDA to unilaterally detain imported food without providing any evidence.
The implementation of the Act not only increases companies' export costs, but penalties for companies that violate the Act will also become more severe. As long as the FDA has reason to believe that a certain food is adulterated or mislabeled, it can administratively detain the food, and the maximum detention period has increased from 30 days to 60 days. Inspection and quarantine authorities advise all food-related companies exporting to the US to prepare in advance to ensure smooth exports.

When will China also enact this kind of act?
