Causes of nutritional diarrhea in piglets
1 Vitamin deficiency

Vitamins are one of the important nutritional components for pigs. They can not only serve as coenzymes for many enzymes in the pig's body and participate in life activities, but also directly or indirectly affect pig growth and the development of organs and tissues. Vitamin deficiency can cause a series of deficiency diseases, among which the main ones that can cause diarrhea in piglets are: deficiency of vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin PP and pantothenic acid. Vitamin B1, as a coenzyme of the alpha-keto acid oxidative dehydrogenation enzyme system, can participate in carbohydrate metabolism. Its deficiency can cause carbohydrate metabolism disorders, leading to the accumulation of metabolic intermediates (pyruvic acid, lactic acid, etc.), thereby affecting energy supply. The clinical manifestations in piglets are: vomiting, diarrhea, and stunted growth. Vitamin B2 acts as a coenzyme in organisms to participate in oxidation. When deficient, piglets show: vomiting, anal mucosal inflammation accompanied by diarrhea, etc. Deficiency of vitamin PP, which can promote iron absorption and red blood cell production, can cause metabolic disorders of protein, fat and carbohydrates, leading to chronic indigestion, and even diffuse enteritis resulting in diarrhea. Pantothenic acid is a component of coenzyme A in piglets and plays an important role in maintaining normal digestive tract function and improving disease resistance. When deficient, it also manifests as diarrhea.

2 Mineral element deficiency

The mineral elements directly related to piglet diarrhea mainly include: iron, zinc and selenium. Iron is an essential mineral element in the piglet's body. Its deficiency can cause iron deficiency anemia in piglets, leading to reduced disease resistance, susceptibility to pathogenic bacteria, diarrhea and even death. Zinc participates in enzyme synthesis, promotes the synthesis of nucleic acids and proteins, accelerates hormone synthesis and release, maintains the normal physiological function of epithelial tissues, and enhances immune and antioxidant functions. Zinc deficiency can cause inflammation of the gastrointestinal mucosa, disorders of gastrointestinal motility and secretion, and reduce the activity of zinc-containing digestive enzymes, causing decreased digestion and absorption rates, so that chyme accumulates in the gastrointestinal tract and causes piglet diarrhea. Selenium, as a component of GSH-PX (glutathione peroxidase), participates in preventing the accumulation of peroxides and protects cell membranes from damage by peroxidases. When selenium is deficient, GSH-PX activity decreases, and the lipid membranes of gastrointestinal smooth muscle cells undergo qualitative lesions due to peroxidation, thereby causing digestive disorders in piglets, accompanied by intractable diarrhea.

3 The crude protein content in feed is too high

The digestive tract and enzyme system of weaned piglets are not yet fully developed, resulting in low digestibility of protein in the diet and an imbalance in the proportion of essential amino acids. Especially when the crude protein level in the diet is relatively high, more dietary protein enters the large intestine and undergoes putrefactive decomposition, producing large amounts of toxic amine substances such as cadaverine and putrescine, which then damage the intestinal wall tissue, accelerate intestinal peristalsis and increase secretion, weaken the colon's ability to absorb water, and at the same time cause edema of the small intestinal villi, ultimately causing dyspeptic diarrhea. Moreover, studies also show that dietary protein itself is not the only factor at work; there are also allergic reactions caused by certain proteins. Some experts and scholars have pointed out that piglet intestinal allergy to dietary antigens leading to intestinal damage is the main cause of post-weaning diarrhea. The allergic diarrhea of piglets after weaning is related to the type of dietary protein, among which plant protein is an important antigenic substance that causes allergic reactions in the piglet intestine.

4 Electrolyte imbalance

Electrolyte balance plays an important role in osmotic pressure, acid-base balance, and water-salt metabolism in piglets, and is closely related to piglet indigestion and diarrhea. Electrolyte balance in the diet can directly affect the electrolyte balance in the piglet's body and digestive tract. Therefore, electrolyte imbalance in feed can easily cause electrolyte imbalance in the piglet's body and digestive tract, ultimately leading to piglet diarrhea.

5 The pH value of the diet is too high

Weaned piglets themselves, because the gastric fundic glands are underdeveloped, the connection between the stomach and the nervous system has not yet been fully established, and gastric gland function is poor, have a relatively high intragastric pH value. If the pH value in the diet is too high, it will further reduce gastric acidity, provide a suitable living environment for pathogenic bacteria, and then cause them to multiply in large numbers, causing inflammation and edema of the intestinal wall, reducing digestive and absorptive capacity, and causing large amounts of water and nutrients to be discharged from the intestinal lumen, thereby causing piglet diarrhea, dehydration, and even death.

6 Toxic substances and anti-nutritional factors

Oxidative rancidity of feed, mold and deterioration, expiration and loss of effectiveness, excessive trace elements, and the presence of toxic substances (such as gossypol, erucic acid, tannins, etc.) may all trigger piglet diarrhea. Moreover, feeding too much laxative raw material can also cause diarrhea in piglets.
