Fellow gardeners all know that root rot is something many plants go through, and the causes are mostly similar, usually from overwatering or improper fertilizing, mainly because too much fertilizer burns the roots. The refreshingly fragrant lilac is no exception. If you have watered too much, you need to move the lilac to a cool, ventilated place; if you have fertilized too much, you can rinse it under running water, or simply repot it.

What to Do If Lilac Roots Rot

1. How to Handle Overwatering

Many beginner gardeners cannot judge the right amount of water. If you give a lilac too much water, water will collect at the bottom of the pot and the roots will rot. You can move the lilac to a cool, ventilated place, which lets the moisture in the potting soil evaporate and prevents root rot.

2. Place Stones at the Bottom of the Pot

Place stones at the bottom of the flower pot. The stones make the pot more breathable and speed up water drainage, preventing water from collecting and causing root rot.

3. Take the Plant Out of the Pot Directly

You can take the lilac directly out of the pot and place it in a cool spot, so the water drains away faster and root rot is avoided.

4. Improper Fertilizing

Besides applying too much fertilizer causing root rot, improper fertilizing methods can also cause the roots to rot, because if the fertilizer is not fully decomposed it releases a lot of heat and the roots rot. Once the roots rot, you must cut the roots off, and just remember to apply thin fertilizer frequently.

Fellow gardeners now have a certain understanding of how to deal with lilac root rot. With lilac root rot, the key is still prevention and control: usually pay attention to watering in the right amount and to fertilizing the lilac properly. If root rot has already appeared, you can cut off the rotten roots as appropriate. That way the lilac can bloom more beautifully, with a fragrance that refreshes the heart and mind.
