The modern value of the essence of traditional pig farming

As pig farming modernization continues to advance, we must constantly sum up experience and lessons and bring forth the new. Looking back at the earlier stage, we mostly absorbed the spirit of the times and learned from Western experience; we seldom revisited our motherland's cultural heritage, and even adopted a negative and exclusionary attitude toward it. As we drew closer to practice and deepened our understanding, on the basis of critically inheriting traditional pig farming experience, we began to notice the modern value of the essence of traditional pig farming.
Industrialized pig farming is one of the advanced modern pig farming techniques. In the early days, industrialized pig farmers often set modern techniques in opposition to traditional ones, regarding the former as absolutely advanced and the latter as absolutely backward. After a period of exploration, they began to perceive that there is an essence in pig farming traditions that can be integrated, elevated, and carried forward in modernization. The essence of traditional pig farming has its modern value.
We need a pluralistic viewpoint: regardless of ancient or modern, Chinese or foreign, we should consistently foster strengths and avoid weaknesses, discard the coarse and seek the refined, so as to better serve pig farming modernization.
In recent years, after going through a period of emulating modern Western trends, the pig farming community has looked back and seen the modern value of the essence of traditional pig farming; and in some technical links they have inherited and carried it forward, achieving real results.
For a long time, our country has bred many pig breeds with distinctive characteristics, and these breeds are renowned worldwide for early maturity, tolerance of coarse feed, good meat quality, and strong reproductive capacity. In the earlier stage, China emphasized introducing four major pig breeds (Landrace, Large White, Duroc, Hampshire) and other foreign pig breeds; now it values the research and promotion of the excellent characteristics of local pig breeds, and has successfully bred new pig breeds such as the Sutai pig (new Taihu pig), which have been formally put into production.
Traditional pig farming has rich experience in making extensive use of green feed. Since the promotion of pig farming modernization, the status of green feed in pig farming feed has gradually declined, especially in industrialized pig farms representing modern pig farming, where green feed is basically not used. But in recent years many pig farmers have again taken a favorable view of green feed, and even if they do not use it in large amounts, they still include it in appropriate amounts, and some units actively open up sources of green feed. Xiamen Minhui Food Company's 6 pig farms produce 10,000 commercial Duroc-Landrace-Large White pigs annually, plant 8 hm2 of napier grass, build a 100 m3 biogas digester on the mountain, use pig manure and urine to produce biogas, and use the biogas slurry to irrigate napier grass. First, a pulper is used to add water to the napier grass and pulverize it into grass pulp, then a mixer is used to blend the grass pulp evenly with mixed concentrate to feed the pigs; the weight ratio of concentrate to fresh grass is 1:1.2. One meat pig starts being fed grass at a live weight of about 25 kg, and by the time it reaches 100-110 kg for slaughter, it needs to be fed more than 200 kg of grass. For every 1,500 pigs slaughtered, 1 hm2 of land is allocated, and each pig can save 35 kg of concentrate.
Traditional pig farming uses bedding straw in winter. Industrialized pig farms use slatted floors and insulation equipment. Practice has proved that using bedding straw can save electricity for insulation. Fattening pigs can also increase their growth rate. Farrowing sows will not have their natural instinct to root around and make a straw nest disturbed. Now some industrialized pig farms have appropriately adopted bedding straw according to specific circumstances.
As long as we can study it carefully, the essence of traditional pig farming can still shine brilliantly in some fields of pig farming science and technology.
In addition, due to the imbalance in regional economic development in our country, some regions clearly lack the conditions to introduce modern science and technology, and in these regions the essence of traditional pig farming again has broad space. Even in advanced industrialized pig farms, it is not ruled out that the essence of traditional pig farming can demonstrate its modern value in certain technical links.

Completely agree, but too little has been borrowed. For example, old diseases recurring.
