Rabbit hutch design requirements

Rabbit hutch design should generally be low in cost, durable, easy to operate and manage, and meet the physiological needs of meat rabbits. The design content includes hutch specifications, structure and overall height, etc.
(1) Hutch specifications The size of the hutch should be determined according to the different breeds, types and ages of meat rabbits. Generally, the principle is that meat rabbits can move freely inside the hutch. Breeding rabbit hutches should be appropriately larger than commercial rabbit hutches, and indoor rabbit hutches should be slightly smaller than outdoor rabbit hutches. Generally, for male and female rabbits and replacement breeding rabbits, the area required per rabbit is 0.25-0.4 sq m, and for fattening rabbits it is 0.12-0.15 sq m.
(2) Rabbit hutch components
① Hutch walls Generally, they can be built with bricks or cement boards, or nailed together with bamboo strips or metal plates. When using brickwork or cement prefabricated parts, support ledges for the dropping board and hutch floor board must be reserved, and the width of the support ledge should preferably be 3-5 cm; when using bamboo, wooden slats or metal strips, the slat width is 15-30 mm and the spacing is 15-20 mm.
② Dropping board Cement prefabricated parts should preferably be used, with a thickness of 2-2.5 cm. In a multi-tier rabbit hutch, the dropping board of the upper tier serves as the hutch top of the lower tier. To prevent manure, urine and sewage from the upper hutch from splashing and soiling the lower hutch, the dropping board should extend 3-5 cm beyond the front of the hutch body and 5-10 cm beyond the back. During design and installation, a certain slope is also needed, with an inclination angle of about 150, so that manure and urine can automatically fall through the board surface into the manure ditch and facilitate cleaning.
③ Hutch floor board Generally, it is made of bamboo strips or galvanized cold-drawn steel wire. For a movable hutch floor board nailed with bamboo strips, the bamboo strips should be smooth, with a width of 2.2-2.5 cm, a thickness of 0.7-0.8 cm, and a spacing of 1-1.2 cm. The direction in which the bamboo strips are nailed should be perpendicular to the hutch door to prevent rabbits' feet from developing a paddling posture toward both sides. For rabbit hutches made of galvanized cold-drawn steel wire, the welded mesh specifications are 50 mm x 13 mm or 75 mm x 13 mm, with a diameter of 1.8-2.4 mm; if plastic-coated cold-drawn steel wire or nylon-coated cold-drawn steel wire is used, the effect is even better, and the mesh bottom is relatively firm and not easily damaged.
④ Hutch door Generally installed at the front of the hutch, it can be made of bamboo strips, perforated iron sheet, or galvanized cold-drawn steel wire. It is required to open and close conveniently, be smooth on the inside, and be able to defend against animal damage.
(3) Overall height To facilitate operation, management and maintenance, the total height of the rabbit hutch should be controlled below 2 m, and the height of the lowest tier of rabbit hutch from the ground should be above 25 cm, so as to facilitate ventilation and moisture prevention, and give the rabbits on the bottom tier a better living environment.
