Key Points and Precautions for Care After a Sow Gives Birth

Issues to Watch After a Sow Gives Birth
The feeding and management techniques for sows after farrowing are as follows:
1. Do not feed on the day of farrowing
Because a sow's farrowing takes a long time, it consumes a great deal of her physical strength, leaves her mentally exhausted, and weakens the activity of her gastrointestinal function. Feeding is generally not recommended; instead, provide plenty of drinking water, warm water in winter, with a suitable addition of salt, electrolytic multivitamins, etc., and if necessary, water with wheat bran (a small amount).
2. Feed thin liquid feed 2 to 3 days after farrowing, and gradually increase the amount of feed provided
2 to 3 days after a sow farrows, even more attention must be paid to the feeding method for lactating sows. Because farrowing reduces gastrointestinal function, overfeeding at this time is most likely to trigger post-farrowing anorexia in sows. For the first 2 to 3 days, feed little but often, and give liquid feed. Then gradually increase the amount of feed provided, reaching the normal feeding amount by 5 to 7 days.
3. 4 to 5 days after the sow farrows, pay attention to increasing the sow's activity
After giving birth, because the sow's physique is weaker and the piglets suckle frequently, her activity should be increased at this time, which helps strengthen her physique, reduce disease, and increase milk production. You can let the sow out of the pen to move around, and then return her to the pen for nursing.
4. Inject an appropriate amount of medication to prevent endometritis in the sow
Most sows take a relatively long time to farrow, especially when the fetal membranes are exposed externally for a long time, or even retained, making them prone to secondary endometritis after giving birth. It is generally recommended to inject posterior pituitary extract after the first piglet is born to promote uterine involution and reduce bleeding. For 1 to 3 days after farrowing, inject medications such as penicillin, streptomycin, and Houttuynia cordata to prevent the occurrence of endometritis.
