Summer-Sown Watermelon Cultivation Techniques
Summer-sown watermelon cultivation builds on early cultivation of spring-crop watermelon with early harvest. After late July or August, watermelon supply gradually decreases. In areas with a longer frost-free period, summer-sown watermelon harvested before National Day can be developed in appropriate amounts. Choose high-quality varieties that are tolerant of high temperature and high humidity, disease-resistant, thick-skinned and suitable for transport, such as Zhongyu No. 6, Xincheng No. 1, P2 and Fengshou No. 2. Sow as early as possible from early to mid-June to early July, so that low temperatures later do not affect yield and quality. Before fruit set, cultivate more between rows to promote rooting and prevent excessive vine growth, and strengthen pest and disease control. After fruit set, water appropriately more and drain waterlogging after rain. Apply topdressing once when vines are extending and once after fruit set.

Summer-sown watermelon has higher nodes for female flowers and sets fruit relatively late; rain during flowering easily causes fruit abortion, so artificial pollination should be carried out to ensure early fruit set on the main vine. When plant growth is vigorous, twist and injure the stem 3 to 4 leaves before the female flower to appropriately suppress vegetative growth and promote fruit set. During fruit development, strong sunlight and high ground humidity can easily cause sunscald or rot of the fruit, so cover the fruit with grass or melon leaves for shade, and spread sand on the bed surface or place straw underneath to prevent fruit rot.
