Early weaning, colostrum feeding, and proper concentrate feeding
Shentong Animal Husbandry Co., Ltd. in Xian'an District, Xianning City, Hubei Province, has an annual slaughter of 20,000 pigs. Based on current market conditions, it will lose 1.2 million yuan this year. Faced with this situation, they sought answers from science and technology, summarized 15 years of pig-raising experience, and managed scientifically and meticulously according to the characteristics of sows and weaned pigs at each growth stage.

Wean piglets as early as possible

Some farmers believe that the longer suckling piglets nurse, the better. The company's general manager, Tong Guangyao, believes that this not only increases costs, but also reduces sow utilization and produces other side effects. Maternal antibodies only act on piglets for 21 days; after that, some hidden diseases will infect the piglets. As long as the temperature is between 25°C and 30°C, weaning should be carried out on the 18th to 20th day after birth. For each day of earlier weaning, the sow can eat 1 day less concentrate, and the incidence rate is greatly reduced. If weaning is delayed until the 25th day, each sow will eat 91 yuan more concentrate, and the piglet incidence rate will be high.

Scientifically adjust gestation

For the amount of concentrate for sows, they divided the period from conception to farrowing into four stages: days 1-7, days 8-37, days 38-100, and day 101 to farrowing. According to the growth needs of the fetuses in the sow's body during these four stages, each sow was fed 1.8 kg, 2.25 kg, 1.8 kg, and 2.7-3.6 kg of concentrate per day respectively. If too much high-energy, high-protein concentrate is fed in the first stage, the conception rate will decrease; in the second and third stages, concentrate does not need to be fed too much, otherwise the sow will become too fat, which may cause difficult farrowing; the fourth stage is the fetal growth period, and more concentrate should be fed appropriately to increase piglet birth weight and survival rate. If not controlled, a sow can eat 3-3.5 kg of concentrate per day during gestation.
After using the four-stage concentrate adjustment method for pregnant sows, each sow can reduce costs by about 70 yuan per production cycle, and with 2.4 litters per year per sow, the total cost reduction is about 170 yuan. With this item alone, the company's 1,100 sows reduced losses by 190,000 yuan in one year.

Let piglets in the same litter receive colostrum equally

Tong Guangyao found that among piglets in the same litter, a few piglets born later could not obtain enough maternal antibodies because they did not receive enough colostrum, resulting in a lower survival rate. Therefore, he put some of the earlier-born piglets that had received colostrum into an insulated box, let the later-born piglets eat enough colostrum, and then released the earlier-born pigs to continue nursing, so that piglets in the same litter could basically receive colostrum equally, reducing mortality and laying a foundation for their future growth.

Nutrition should be reasonable and not excessive

The nutritional needs of meat pigs differ at each age stage. Tong Guangyao fed concentrate within 10 days after piglet weaning. After that, as the body weight of the young pigs increased, the feed ratio changed accordingly to save input as much as possible. In this way, the pigs' nutrition was both reasonable and not excessive.
