Gardenia in bloom

Gardenia is also known as zhizi and huangzhizi, in the family Rubiaceae, genus Gardenia.

When gardenias bloom, the whole room fills with a fresh fragrance.

Growing Environment

Gardenia is native to China. It likes warm, humid conditions and plenty of sunlight, is relatively cold-tolerant and tolerates partial shade, fears waterlogging, and requires loose, fertile, acidic sandy loam.

The taste of summer

It likes light but also tolerates shade; under shaded conditions the leaves are a deep green, but flowering is somewhat poorer; it likes a warm, humid climate and tolerates heat and slightly tolerates cold (-3°C); it likes fertile, well-drained, acidic light clay loam, and also tolerates drought and poor soil, but the plant easily ages; it has a relatively strong resistance to sulfur dioxide. Its ability to send up root suckers and to sprout is strong, and it tolerates pruning and renewal.

Water and Fertilizer Management

Gardenia likes a warm, humid environment with plenty of sunlight.

Therefore its need for water and air humidity is also very important. During the growing period of the gardenia, pay attention to increasing the amount of watering appropriately, and also pay attention to spraying some water on the leaves of the gardenia, which can very well raise the air humidity.

At the same time, also pay attention not to water too much in winter, to prevent root rot from occurring.

Pestsand Diseases Control

1

Chlorosis

Chlorosis is relatively common and is caused by many reasons, so different measures must be taken for its control; generally apply decomposed human excrement or cake fertilizer.

When magnesium is deficient, the tissue between the veins of young leaves loses its green color and turns yellow, and in severe cases the leaves of the whole plant turn yellow, and even scorched leaves and withered branches appear, finally causing the plant to die. For this situation, spray a 0.2%-0.5% ferrous sulfate aqueous solution for control.

Chlorosis caused by magnesium deficiency starts from the old leaves and gradually develops toward the new leaves, the veins still remain green, and in severe cases the leaves fall off and the plant dies. For this situation, spray 0.7%-0.8% boron-magnesium fertilizer for control.

Overwatering, freezing, and so on can also cause yellow leaves, so special attention must be paid during care.

Nitrogen deficiency shows as simple yellowing of the leaves, with new leaves small and brittle.

Potassium deficiency shows as old leaves changing from green to brown.

Phosphorus deficiency shows as old leaves turning purplish red or dark red.

2

Sooty mold

It occurs on branches and leaves. Once found, it can be wiped clean with clear water, or sprayed with 0.3 degrees Baume lime sulfur mixture, or 1000-1200 times carbendazim.

3

Rot disease

It often occurs on the lower main trunk, with the stem swelling and cracking. Once found, immediately scrape it off or apply 5-10 degrees lime sulfur mixture; several applications are needed before it takes effect.

4

Insect pests

Insect pests include stinging caterpillars, scale insects and whiteflies. Use 2.5% deltamethrin emulsifiable concentrate at 3000 times dilution to spray and kill stinging caterpillars, and 40% omethoate emulsifiable concentrate at 1500 times dilution to spray and kill scale insects and whiteflies.

Aphids, flea beetles and hawkmoth larvae: for the first two, dimethoate or trichlorfon can be used; for the latter, 666 powder can be used for control or they can be caught by hand.
