Diagnosis and treatment of trace element deficiency in cattle

I. Copper deficiency
It occurs mostly in draft cattle, especially in calves. It manifests as weight loss, anemia, protein in the urine of cows after calving, and decreased milk yield; the coat fades in color and becomes rough; calves grow slowly, often have diarrhea, are prone to fractures, have swollen and stiff joints, stand on the tips of the hooves, and show decreased red blood cells and hemoglobin. This condition is mostly caused by insufficient copper content in the feed, or by excessive molybdenum, zinc, iron, lead, and calcium carbonate, among others. The prevention and treatment method is to inject 400 milliliters of calcium disodium edetate, copper aminoacetate, copper glycinate, and the like into cattle every 4-6 months; copper sulfate can also be mixed at 0.5% of the amount of salt fed, allowing the cattle to lick it, once every few days.
II. Iodine deficiency
The clinical manifestations are enlarged thyroid, slow growth and development, weight loss, anemia, hair loss, and decreased fertility. The cause is insufficient iodine content in the feed or drinking water. An appropriate amount of iodized salt can be added to the feed, or 250 milligrams of potassium iodide can be added to 1 kilogram of salt; 2-5 drops of iodine tincture can also be supplied daily, or a 1% potassium iodide solution, that is, 1 milliliter of potassium iodide plus 100 milliliters of water, can be added for the cattle to drink freely.
III. Selenium deficiency
When the selenium content in the feed is lower than 0.05 milliliters per kilogram, this disease will be caused, especially in calves. This condition is mostly concentrated in late winter or the spring and summer seasons, and is prone to occur from February to May. The symptoms are listlessness, stiff limbs, accelerated breathing, rapid heartbeat with irregular rhythm, trembling of the whole body's muscles, unsteady standing, and staggering gait; in severe cases, paralysis of the limbs, loss of appetite, constipation or diarrhea, and in the later stage edema appears, followed quickly by death. The prevention and treatment method is injectable treatment with 0.9% sodium selenite, with calves receiving 5-10 milliliters per head each time by intramuscular injection, and the dosage for adult cattle increased as appropriate, repeated once every 10-20 days, with obvious results.
IV. Zinc deficiency
In cattle deficient in zinc, the skin is rough and thickened, similar to dermatitis symptoms, and can reach about 40% of the whole body, most obviously on the nasal mirror, anus, vulva, tail tip, ears, hind limbs, and neck. This condition is mainly caused by a lack of zinc in the feed, or by excessive calcium in the feed. To treat this condition, 0.02% zinc sulfate or zinc carbonate can be added to the feed; in severe cases, 2-4 milliliters of zinc sulfate per kilogram of body weight can be injected.
